There's a long history of political humor on the show. Starting with Chevy Chase imitating Gerald Ford, Dan Akroyd and Jimmy Carter. They make fun of people in powerful places. No sense of humor anymore.

The statement was that people cared. And many loved it. The fact that there is a consistent and sizable audience to sell as space in on all the normal show weeks is an indicator enough people enjoy it such that they watch in a regular or semi-regular basis.
