I was listening to the stream this morning, and to my surprise, I heard old school hip hop in the mix. Then I heard the personality say "Power 102.1, Birmingham's Home for Classic Hip Hop and R&B". When did this happen?
Judging from posts on its WENN's original Facebook page, the changeover may have happened this past Friday: That's when you first see posts recommending people 'like' the new Power 102.1 page.
The station had regular, live old school mixes on Saturday mornings that were handled and hosted by market veteran Chris Coleman, who is the assistant program director at WBHK 98.7 "Kiss FM". Perhaps they received enough positive feedback to make the fulltime switch.
It's a shrewd move, I think. There are some hip-hop 'standards' that both the Jamz and Kiss audiences can like if they find their radio dial fingers itchy--it probably strengthens that trio from a sales standpoint from what WUHT Hot 107.7, 104.1 (The Beat), or 105.1 (Hallelujah) are doing.
