When did WSB-AM stop playing music?

I have a question to bring up. I know many of you remember WSB-AM in the 1980s, with "Skinny" Bobby Harper doing mornings, and Scott Slade's traffic.

When did WSB drop their MOR format, and go all news-talk-sports (like they are now)?

When Walt Williams drove SB into the ground - whatever date that was!

As best as I can recall, when the Gulf War started in 1990.

Well, many stations switched from full-service to News-Talk during that time. I wonder how WSB handled the switch. They were an important news station for many years, with those famous Talmadge weather forecasts part of the station for years and years.

How did they handle the switch to news-talk?

Seems to me it's wasn't so much a flip, as just going full-time news devoted to the war, and never went back. I can't be sure but I think Bobby Harper and Kathy Fischman just was introing Scott Slade and the news so much, the Powers That Be just decided to turn the whole show over to Scott. Mike Kavanagh's WSBHistory site had more details, I think, when it was up.

As mentioned above, I recall Scott Slade doing traffic -- Kim Peterson (aka "the Kimmer") did the serious newscasts back then.

Speaking of wsbhistory.com, when is the GRHOF going to get it back up? I never got the chance to listen to Mike K's (RIP) hourlong program on and about WSB before the site came down after his death.

Here's a treat for your ears, corn-lovers! Go to http://www.79waky.com/airchecks.htm and page down to H for Skinny Bobby Harper airchecks from WAKY the Big 79 in Louisville, KY.

As a matter of fact Scott Slade flew the chopper back in the day,and he worked the last music shift on WSB,then he took over AMN.

I don't think Scott was a chopper pilot.. he didn't get into flying until after those days and I'm pretty sure its fixed wing.
I can remember Greg Pachano (sp) doing afternoon drive on SB playing music.. also Dick Himby (sp) with his stupid voice character.. Also Tom Darron did afternoon drive spinning music. I moved here in 78 and I'm pretty sure they were music until the late 80s. The Gulf War timing could be correct. I can remember the day when the formatics changed though and Bobby Harper getting really pissed at having to say the call letters every 30 seconds. I actually called in to ask WTF.. or so to speak.. his comment if I recall correctly was "damn myopic program director"
When the morning show first came on the air in the morning.. for the first 30 minutes or so Slade was in his car driving to the airport and they used to get him to mimic Munson.. it was great!!

OMG! (as I was saying) I remember that dumb-a** Dick Hemby voice, too, and althugh I'm ashamed to admit it, I remember what he called that mumbling idiot sidekick - Rusty Knob! My-oh-my how we can
file away all that useless rubble!
