When Did You Seriously Get Into Dance Music?

Time to "date" myself.

I've liked dance music as early as 1974 with songs like The Hustle and the classic Barry White pieces.

Though my dive into dance music and never looking back happened in 1978 when I played around with my radio dial and heard WKTU here in New York. I've been hooked ever since. And even though there were certain voids that led me to other music (old skool "rap"), deep down my roots with dance music never left. And when Hot 103 happened in 1986 along with the Chicago house sound, I have gone even deeper into the music I love! :)

I liked a few dance songs that crossed over into the pop/top 40 radio format like the Alice Deejay and Sonique tunes. In fact my cousin let me hear some songs (iiO and Deep Dish come to mind) and I liked those. However it wasn't until the Dallas area received its own dance radio format (2002! just four years ago) that I got into it. When the station started, a lot of the tunes were a mystery as to what they were so an unofficial site was started to list the tunes and from there I was able to figure out what all these dance tunes were.

Thinking about it, even before I listened to much electronic music as a whole, I still liked more of the songs than my friends so no particular person influenced me to like it. I'm honestly still a newbie in the sense that I was barely listening to dance tunes when Ian Van Dahl had their first few hits. It's interesting too because I must know of at least 5,000+ dance songs and it's just about the only thing I listen too, so it didn't take long to hear many years' worth of music.
______________

Started in 1989 for me with Power 106 LA. I did enjoy some of the dancey big pop hits before played on KIISfm as a kid but didn't have a clue what dance music was all about and all the other dance songs I was missing. It was also the first year I heard music beat-mixed and I was hooked on this cool new (to me) style.

Late 90's when I started to like dance msuic, around 2000 when i started listening to alot. It started when i was 16, 17 (98, 99) after Party 105 signed on. I would go out to the Hamptons a few times a year and would lose Hot 97's signal (I was and still am a big hip hop fan), This was before Hartford at WZMX Hot 93.7 & power 104.1 as hip hop, and pre Blaze 101.7 on eastern LI (now the Beat). So back then their was no hip hop station you could hear on the east end of Long Island, so flipping around to hear hip hop I started listening to Party 105 which played dance & hip hop. The dance music basically started to grow on me & started listening a bit more especially during the Summer DX season where I could pick Party 105 up in Southeast Nassau County quite a bit. Did a few antenna tricks after that and was able to pick a weak signal sometimes. I liked the music, but didn't hear it enough to really become a fan. However, fall of 2000 when I started Stony Brook University (which I dormed at and is in North Central Suffolk County) Party 105 had a strong signal and I started listening to dance much more and really became a fan of the music.
______________

With the birth of "Disco 92, WKTU". I was black t-shirt wearing Sabbath listener and I was told about Disco in '75. The station to listen to, for Disco, was New York's WBLS. I did not like it and laughed it off. However, when KTU came on he air, I was hooked. My top stations during that time was KTU and WPLJ (when they were Rock).

I have been a dance music fan ever since. My gripe about the latest batch of Dance is that it is too repetitive and may songs lack soul.

"Rhythm Is A Dancer" was one of the major songs that got me into it too.

Mine started back the first time I heard songs by Snap (Rhythm Is A Dancer), Lil Suzy (Take Me In Your Arms) and saw the videos on the music channel "The Jukebox" on cable TV. Here in Sacramento, there was not all that much dance music on the air growing up, except for a while KSFM 102.5 was big on Freestyle, like with Debbie Deb, Trinere, Lil Suzy, etc. They also would play a few non freestyle dance songs like "Be My Lover" by La Bouche and "Another Night by Real McCoy and "A Mover La Colita" by Artie The One Man Party. But during the periods we had no dance music, I would listen through static to 97.7 out of Stockton, 107.7 (then Wild 107.7 out of San Francisco, and 104.7 out of the San Joaquin valley for my dance music. Artists like Gina G, Haddaway, Real McCoy, La Bouche, Captain Hollywood Project, Culture Beat, Jocelyn Enriquez, etc. Then KSFM 102.5 gave some pretty major airplay to artists like Angelina and Jocelyn Enriquez for a few years.
As dance music faded off the dial in Sacramento, I had a hard time catching it on the radio or TV. Then I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and my thirst was quenched. For the first couple years the dial was stuck on Wild and also at times to Z95.7. The Bay Area was playing a ton of great dance music by artists like Angelina, Jossette, Jocelyn Enriquez, Planet Soul, Rosalinda, La Bouche ("You Won't Forget Me" on 95.7), Damia, Rockell, Stefanie Fastro, Stevie B ("You Are The One" was a new song played on Wild 94.9), Lina Santiago, Daisey, S-Factor (Sharyn Maceren), Buffy, Spanish Fly, along with the freestyle and house classics that were huge in the Bay. That was an awesome time!
