When do the DJs make their Debut on 106.9 KFRC????????????

XM RADIO

Come on CBS, youve had a week, The Magical Mystery Tour is about ready to expire isnt it? John Mack Flanagan should be your 1st choice, Whats the Delay? It cant be money at CBS, you got rid of Imus ,JV, and Elvis, the savings are in the Bank, Get some real talent in there, weve waited long enough!! Kenny in Concord

Don't hold your breath, Kenny. Given CBS's track record with format flips, it could be months before DJs arrive. It took 4 or 5 months for CBS to hire the morning team at MOViN, and months more before the other jocks arrived. Contrast that with Entercom, which had all of the Wolf jocks start on air at the same time after those 10,000 songs - maybe a month after the premiere.

Dear Kenny in Concord,

You really don't understand how radio works. It is a business and with the change in formats from a largely syndicated program schedule to what will likely be a "LIVE" schedule on KFRC, it takes some moving money around. In addition, with the loss in revenue from the Free-FM flops around the country, along with other formats like MOViN' who are ratings challenged (not only here in the Bay Area, but Dallas and Portland too), plus the IMUS settlement means that it will be sometime before a staff is live on-air. My guessis that getting a LIVE airstaff hired and in place will take at least 1 month from the time a PD is hired. Getting the money in place is the first order of business because a format change was unplanned. It takes time to move things in corporate radio (not the idea situation, but that's just theway it is). There is a long list of people who have to give their blessing to a project before funding occurs.

My guess is that they rushed into getting this on the air to prvent anyone else from making the change rather than waiting til the airstaff was ready to go. Be patient and it will happen. As for John Mack, well does he want to be back on KFRC??? Is his approach still relivant today? That is what some of the suits will be asking.

When the PD is in place and the air-staff is hired, Kenny in Concord will not be a happy camper. He will be more upset than when his SS checks don't arrive on time.

Sorry Kenman, stay with XM.

it takes months for any new format to get jocks

There was a time when some stations in major markets had everything in place when they debuted a new format. Even remember reading about stations that had the PD and DJs hired and ready, the formatics in place, they had even spent a week in the studio doing a dry run. Then Monday morning or sometimes Thursday Morning they exploded on the scene full bore. Now that was professionalism.

Can you imagine a new McDonalds opening with just the small hamburger, promising to eventually get the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder?

That was how KFRC, seven months after the launch of KHJ, Los Angeles, went Top 40 in 1966. The old format was replaced by "The Parade of Hits"...a barely-live (board ops and the occasional unnamed announcer) playing the biggest songs of the last 15 years. Meantime, down the hall, in the production rooms and secondary studios, the jocks and engineers did practice shows. When they went live, it sounded like they'd been there forever.

Now, not only do the jocks (when they arrive) have no experience with the station and the format, but it's a huge alteration of the station's sound...which no doubt repels some of the new cume which was there only for the music. Better (in my book) to have the jocks there from day one...the audience won't feel a bait and switch...they'll know what they station sounds like the first time they hear it.

I agree with the last 2 posts. Why let listeners tune by and sample crap? Having your A Team in place and practiced up, the elements ready, etc, and the minute the format hits the air it makes a great impression. Speeds the cume building, word of mouth, etc. This is how CHR stations in the old days could rocket to the top in a book or 2. No one wants to spend the money to do it right now.

RickMundayShow, Oops, your incorrect on your assumption, @ 54 Im hardly on SS, perhaps you know something I dont Yes i will keep my XM ,Sirius and enjoy 106.9 KFRC (At No Cost)!! Increase your postings, come out of the closet, 4 posts, In the meantime Im listening to Bobby Ocean, have a great memorial day weekend, Kenny in Concord, cant afford XM Munday?

That's how we did it with KOST here in Los Angeles. We had a shorter period of time, but we're doing dry runs in the last few days before the flip. Everything and everyone was in place before the change and we were off and running. Now days many format flips happen with only the consultant and music in place with board-ops or automation doing the work until a staff is hired. I'm not sure why, but that seems to be the norm. Growing up in Northern California I was an intense KFRC lover, so I don't really mind that their jockless now. I've been thinking about who they'll hire and have high hopes that it will be a staff of KFRC veterans. John Mack Flanagan would be wonderful! But many of those deejays are scattered across the nation, so we'll have to wait and see. It's great to have KFRC back!

I also agree 100% that when a format changes, it is Grand Opening. Put on your best, first impressions last forever. So that no matter when someone happens to tune in, the station isn't 'still under construction' so to say.

Execpt for the instance with 106.9, since no one was listening anyway, go ahead and carefully put KFRC back together again. Just as long it isn't a Humpty Dumpty effort.

Echoing Michael Hagarty's memories of the premiere of the Big 610 - there are also stories out there about the premiere of Boss Radio KHJ in Los Angeles. One source is Ron Jacobs' website.

Bill Drake and Jacobs had hired their team, and had Robert W. Morgan, the Real Don Steele, et al. not only doing dry runs with the format off-air, but jocking on-air at KHJ under different names for a week or so - playing the existing MOR format - to get familiar with the station and the equipment.

As the story goes, rival KFWB started using the "Boss Radio" slogan, so everybody went into high gear and decided they had to premiere early. To save time, they hastily adopted the exact playlist of their other rival - KRLA - and went on-air with the Boss format live and sounding totally professional.

Between the incompetent consultants and stupid gm's is it any wonder why new formats start off the way they do. For the Rusty Walker's and Dan Vallie's out there remember....The first impression is the lasting inpression.

Be realistic. The more people know about a flip the more dangerous it is to the station making the change. Think of how much blabbing goes on on just this board! Unstaffed and incomplete isn't the ideal way to do it, but it's reality.

KFRC's library is probably around 500 songs currently.

Kenny -

You just don't get it....Do You? The last thing KFRC wants to do is hire old sounding tired DJ's like John Mac. And the last thing they probably don't want to do is have you as a listener. Not to sound dis-respectful, but you are out of the demographic appeal of KFRC and most of the other Bay area stations. When KFRC returns with an airstaff, they will have good solid contemporary sounding performers like who sound real and are relatable.

As somebody suggested earlier - You need to stick with XM radio!

GM

I don't want a station that has good solid contemporary sounding peformers that sound real and are relatable, I just want a station that knows how to play all the hits, all the time! Just like they did in the
70's and the 80's. RadioGM I bet your not a day over 32 years old. The notion that radio should only be for the young people in our society is just a bunch of BS!

If he wants to do it, but John Mack Flanagan would be an absolute welcomed sound back on the air. But keep in mind, he is happy in his current capacity as a Security Officer. He has been screwed with just too many times in the radio business. This is still radio we are talking about. Has anything changed or has it gotten worse? So would you want to give up what you currently have to come back to this industry with its constant changes?

Yes we want, at least almost all of us, JMF back on the air. But think of JMF's personal needs and future. Let's not be selfish and ruin his current position just to satisfy our needs for the short term.

RadioGM, Five posts on Radio Info and thats all you come up with? John Mack Flanagan is A #1 choice for the new KFRC!! I really enjoy a "5 POST " like yourself , Similar to your IQ which is also a 5!! Enough being said, You need talent that can connect with the listener! No more boring DJs or business as usual! As for XM, Sirius, KYAradio1, Richbroradio, I enjoy them all, With 4 subs, and 3 Sirius subs and the Streams and the new KFRC Radio is great!! Let me guess your favorite station is KNEW!!!!!!!!!!! Kenny in Concord

"The last thing KFRC wants to do is hire old sounding tired DJ's like John Mac."

I have to say - I totally disagree with that. Why do you think he "sounds old. He may BE old, but you can't see him on radio, remember?

John Mack Flanagan sounded current in the 70s on KFRC, current in the 80s on various stations, current in the 90s on K-Big, and current just a few years ago on Young Country. Having somebody with a history like John Mack would please the fogeys like myself and Kenny, while the younger listeners (the demographic CBS really wants) would like his voice, and not know or care that he's 60 years old. He'd be just as welcome a voice to younger listeners as some no-name liner-card reader in their 30s.

KOIT has been VERY successful by appealing to listeners of various demographics at the same time - with their music, and also with some of their personalities, who have been around as long as John Mack or Bobby Ocean. I don't remember anybody complaining about Tom Saunders on KOIT (just retired last year), and Tommy did kind of "sound old." Nobody cared.

RadioGM, as I pondered your "Less than Un-acceptable comment concerning John Mack Flanagan, None other than Lkeller, a "Radio Info Regular" seems to dis agree with your Lame annalogy too!! How about Larry Ickies on KOIT, whats your spin on him, and not to forget Don Bleu on Star!! Problem is that these guys know radio better than anyone and people who are into radio want a familiar, DJ one they have grown accustomed to!! I would Imagine you could put Chris Edwards (The Sales Executive at Clear Channel) on any station here and he would be immediatly recognized, been into radio longer than you RadioGM has been around,I would gues you are 32 or younger , sorry to say you missed out on the "Best Radio" ever heard!! Funny how Norm N Nite and Cousin Brucie , and Casey Casem, are still going strong ,, Caseys 75,, any comments Radio GM???????????? Kenny in Concord
