when do we get tiered service

this most likely is on the way, lots of wasted time by both satrads

imho i dont see where they have a choice they need the constant exposure to listeners and if your pay service is not enough to support the growth rate you seek, then open the gates to a national limited advertisment supported free to air promotional service

this would help support and expand the revenue from advertising

say maybe just eight channels along with emergency alerts ......

Patent Application for Tiered Satellite Radio Service

A tiered satellite radio service is not a new idea. Thre are a couple of other patent applications in recent times with similar ideas. It is a viable option to attract the masses. Most people like the idea of satellite radio but a large number refuse to pay for the service--that is until they are exposed to it. It is an idea worthy of debate. The following application was published this past Thursday:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Security enhanced tiered subscription broadcast system

Abstract
A broadcast system is disclosed that allows a broadcaster to provide multiple levels of subscription services. Subscribers have the option of listening to fewer (or no) commercials if they pay a higher fee, or listening to more commercials if they pay a lower (or no) fee. Commercials can be demographically targeted, cannot be skipped, and can be audited for billing purposes.

Hopefully never. Unless I'm not reading this correctly, how can this be? If the satellite companys were to have some kind of tiered servise, that would have to involve adding more channels and correct me if I'm wrong Sirius is at their limit. If they add more channels that would take away sound quality from existing channels (like this is not happening already). And besides FWIW, at least on the channels I listen to, most of the commercials that are currently aired on Sirius are either for get rich quick schemes or internet gaming sites.

Could this be related to hierarchical modulation, the alleged savior of satellite radio (its bandwidth problem, anyway) that both services have had labs working on for years now?
