Does it start this Monday, or next Monday September 18th?

...."the price is right" started its 35th season on CBS this past monday (sept 18th, 2006). the show has a previous life. bill cullen hosted the original series, which aired on nbc from 1956 to 1963 and on abc from 1963 to 1965. Syndicated night-time versions of the game show aired from 1957 to 1964. the 1957-65 run was taped in new york city at a broadway theater. in all, tpir has been on the air (network broadcasting tv) for 42 years.

Then someone at Wikipedia needs to redo their math. I say that because if the show has been on (albeit in various renditions) for the last 50 years (Not 42 years as mentioned above).

In other words, subtract 1956 from 2006 and look at what you have. :D

Cheers :D

I hope Bob Barker continues another 30 years, but would the show definitly continue without him, and who would make a great future host?

There was a night-time TPIR. That didn't last long. I can't remember the guys name.Early-mid 90's.
Barker did host a night version back in the 70's if I recall correctly. Now that the 35th season has
started. I've noticed they're having more than three models on each taping. While I've never
liked TPIR playing 'musical models'. I think Rachael,Gabby,Shane. Work well together.
But I do miss. Janice, Holly, Kathleen..

Tom Kennedy hosted the nighttime Price Is Right in the 70s. It aired once a week in rotation with other game shows (Match Game PM, etc.)

The reference in Wikipedia to 42 years probably comes from not counting the period from 1965 to 1972 when there was no version of TPIR on the air. The host in the 90's nighttime version was Doug Davidson. Dennis James also hosted the nighttime version in the 70's for a while.

Concerning a replacement for Bob Barker, a year or so back in TVGameshows.net Steve Beverly suggested that a replacement should be phased in by allowing them to host a day or two each week, and when Bob Barker retires that the co-host would take over permanently, something similar to what was done with Jay Leno for the Tonight Show. If that doesn't happen, it won't surprise me if when Barker leaves that TPIR will be cancelled and replaced with non-game type programming, or the time will be turned back to local stations.

What a way for season 35 to start--but there had to be some mightly slim odds someone pulled that high a bid out of thin air for the showcase and it just so happened to be a double showcase winner.

Nope. Dennis James hosted the nighttime Price Is Right in the 70's. He also subbed for Bob once on the daytime show during an illness. Not being as familiar with the games as Bob was, Dennis was absolutely hilarious! AFAIK, Dennis also presided over the first (only???) time that both contestants won their showcases (both underbid by exactly the same amount!). When this happened, Dennis literally did not know what to do!! I guess they finally told him that both contestants win. ;D

In the late 70's, Bob took over the nighttime Price Is Right hosting duties to provide continuity and better ratings. I wish they would bring back the rotation of evening game shows. I really don't like Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy five nights a week. I would rather see TPIR, a revived Match Game, Hollywood Squares, etc.

I don't think that any game shows are rigged in favor of any one person any more like it was in the 50's, but I do think that sometimes they make it easier to have a big winner at times when they want higher ratings. Last week Deal or no Deal had an escalating top prize to to $6 million, and 3 people won in the $700,000-750,000 range, which would have been in the $300,000-400,000 range during a normal game. If one player had gone all the way, he would have won $3 million, and another did go all the way and had a chance to swap cases at the end. If she had, she would have won $1 million instead of $750,000.

You're absolutely right on that one, but those were the years! I just love those old game shows and sitcoms. :D

I believe that Tom Kennedy hosted one of the versions of Name That Tune as well as that game show where the winner got to choose a car, try to start it, and won the car if it started (or something along those lines ;)).

Wait a second! I think you were thinking about an 80's(?) version of the nighttime TPIR. I do seem to remember Tom Kennedy hosting a very brief run of TPIR. I was in college at the time and only got to see 3 or 4 shows during that run.

I remember that game show. However the title of the show, has escaped me for many years. It was a row
of cars. As I'm a Pontiac fan. I'm pretty sure the show ran between 1974-1976. They had many Firebird's
up for grabs. Hopefully someone here knows the shows name.

As far as replacements for Bob Barker. Anyone would be better than Ricki Lake

When the time comes to decide if the Price must go on minus Bob or if they fill the slot with something else (like....shudder....yet another daytime talk show....), my vote of course is to keep the show going and fill the slot with Todd Newton. I saw him do the live stage show version of Price, and he had a great energy, rapport with the contestants and a command of the games. Second choice--Doug Davidson who had the same criteria in 1994 (the failure of the show was not a hosting issue).

If the show goes on with someone new, we'll hear an endless litany of "That's not how Bob did it" complaints, but hopefully enough people will be willing to give the show a chance. Bob is wonderful and a legend, but he's not the only person capable of hosting the show--different styles can work within that format.

I hope that Bob stays as long as possible. They need to start having guest hosts (like when Johnny Carson had Jay Leno) once a week to see if they would fit in nicely like when they had auditions to replace Rod Roddy and Johnny Olsen.

I think it'd be nice if they just started rerunning the original episodes once Bob is gone (though they probably wouldn't run the first few seasons with fur coats as gifts)...I'd watch it.

The game show with Tom Kennedy where the winner tried to win a car was Split Second, which is one I liked for that bonus round. The 80's version of Hollywood Squares did something similar as well.
