"When "Free" misses the point"

Me too.
I still wonder why people that object to spending $10 or $12 dollars a month for hundreds of stations, nationwide, on HD or Sirius radio, would be more willing to rush out and spend $300 for an HD Radio with a couple of dozen station choices (at most) with very local coverage.
Why not just listen to HD, Sirius, XM and more then 15,000 other stations for free on the internet using the same computer that they use to visit this board?
Or get an MP3 player or iPod with unlimited control and choices?
Wireless, computerless inernet radio is already here, and developing fast.

P.S. I listen free on the internet, and to the dozen AM FM radios I already own, and don't need any new radios at all!
Now that's really FREE!

I know there is Wifi and all that, but can you really listen to internet radio in the car, walking down the street, at the beach, etc?

Not unless you just happen to live in an area that has Wifi. And even then who would want to carry something like that around?

HD Radio, XM and Sirius have car tuners. XM has XM2Go (portable radios like the MyFi that you can carry around like a walkman), etc

WiMax is supposed to bring Internet Radio to portable devices and automobiles by 2008. Cingular, and I believe Sprint, already are using the 3G network for Wireless Internet, with no WiFi hot spots to worry about...

The fact that "HD" radio causes so much interference it may actually reduce the number of usable radio choices in suburban and rural areas.

Yes you can jog or drive and listen to internet radio easily.
WIFI wireless radio need be no more problem to carry around then a cell phone, iPod, or pocket radio, and it connects to the iPod/MP3 player audio input of most of the new car radios and systems. Also WIMAX is coming, and it will have a 30 mile range.
Check out the pocket sized WIFI internet radio that gets over 10,000 and podcasts stations here:

Entire cities are becoming WIFI hotspots, and internet radios are being built into cell phones, along with full fidelity stereo headphones that can be wireless blutooth compatible, on the cell phones that many people already carry and update every few years. Most major cell phone companies are offering internet radio/podcasting service.

Exactly. Broadcasting's proposed "solution" of HD Radio actually increases interference problems, and reduces coverage, variety, and fidelity.

I thought this was significant, from RWOnline's excellent article:

"Now Motorola believes its new iRadio will grab consumer's attention better than both satellite or HD Radio - and iPods - alone. The device combines music with cell phones in a mobile environment. It features hundreds of commercial-free Internet radio stations that can be downloaded onto listeners' cell phones, along with their own personal content - songs or spoken word content from MP3 files."

"HD Radio will be a hard sell "if it's message to the public is, 'Buy this $500 radio because it's digital,'" he said. "The Achilles heel for traditional radio is they didn't look over their shoulder and pay attention to the growth of Internet radio. You can't just ignore technology because it hasn't hit you yet."

read today where the next device based on the zing reference design ,which featured sirius content while being shown, will let you via the pc select and store on your device (am/fm) internet stations for your listening pleasure ........the device is due next year, zing refused to name the manufacture for the new device .....

sure sounds like industry changing devices are on the way......trouble is coming to this tired old industry....

who will use five hundred channels (motorola/iradio), its still comes down to a choice issue based on the what the listener really perfers at some point.

also i read today that ipod/apple has hit a speed bump with chrysler something on rights nothing specific was mentioned, so it could either a content rights issue or the dashboard space now that sirius has a similar device they offer in the form of the stiletto....from what i understand the oem agreements exclude competing devices in some cases..
