When Is a New Station No Longer "New"?

Ms. Holly Haze, where are you?

>I figured they'd drop the "new" after the Christmas music! I was just thinking the same thing yesterday! I barely remember Star 104.7!

"The New K-104.7"...will the "new" ever be dropped from
> their jingles, liners, etc?

I wondered when someone was going to comment on that. Programmers and consultants seem to be obsessed with the word "New". I worked at another station that used the word new and we dropped it for awhile ony to pick it up again!

To drop NEW we would need NEWER jingles. Maybe then it would be "the NEWER K-104.7? Somebody stop me I'm having way too much fun with this, I'm getting silly!

I am so tired of saying New, but I doubt it will change any time soon.
Hope this helps!!

My thoughts exactly. Take, for example, the "New Hot 98.1" in Greenville/Spartanburg, or "New 92" in Columbia. The new is about fresh rather than young, just as Holly said. But then again, I wouldn't exactly associate "new" with 104.7's format.

Now, let me see...

Who was it that said or sang "Everything old is new again"?

I am not saying it makes perfect sense, or any sense for that matter, but I am trying to convey that it won't get changed any time soon, so we can discuss the word "new" on this site for as long as we want, but it will change nothing.

If you go by the old WBCY example, you drop "all new" just as you're getting ready to fire on air people.

"New" has been used by programmers for years as a "magical" word
that says there is something different on the dial. Of course, when
it just becomes part of the slogan, the freshness is lost!

Generally, most drop the word after the first year...since the
effectiveness is gone.

There is a company in Tennesssee that uses the phrase "Tennessee's New Mix" on all their stations. And they've been doing that for the last 5 years!
That is totally insane.....and most importantly, useless!

booger!

Plus, this isn't Holly's decision. All she is is an employee of the station!

There are laws that govern this type of behavior. Generally after 18 months or so they are required to drop it. If you want to give them a hard time, contact your local attorney general or solicitor at the state level. A letter from the state agency usually puts a stop to using "the new" pretty fast. Add to that the joy of causing your competitor some emotional discomfort, it makes for a nice week.<P ID="signature">______________
