Mix. Sunny. Fickle. And tomorrow, Warm. Does Rochester deserve FOUR all-Christmas stations? Will Classical 91.5 or WBER be next? (And will this send me screaming to the store to finally buy that XM Roady I've been meaning to pick up?)

Now you can understand why one of my heroes is The Grinch.

As for the other stations (WBER and 91.5) going to Xmas music, I just just imagine hearing Santa Mord afternoons from now until Jan 1st.

Ho Ho Ho.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was beginning to think that Scott Fybush was going to criticize area radio stations for going overboard with snowstorm coverage (given that lake-effect snows are forecast for much of upstate New York). But then again, with the periodic lake-effect snows in the region, local broadcasters probably react to forecasts of snow much more responsibly than in other cities.

There are often, in-season, complaints on the Philadelphia TV board about how that city's TV weather anchors and local TV stations hype winter storms all out of proportion.

A Soft AC going all-Christmas probably makes a lot of sense business-wise.

But Fickle going all-Christmas?? That doesn't make any sense at all.

P.S.: According to the station's playlist as published on Yes.com, Fickle made the flip around 7:30 A.M. this morning (November 23rd).

Fickle Christmas

That was my initial reaction too. I don't understand their thinking, unless a format "adjustment" is in the offing, and Christmas music is a buffer between the old Fickle and the new Fickle. Either that, or they feel like they have to go Christmas music to compete in the "background music" sweepstakes.

Then again, maybe they'll be playing Christmas Deep Cuts...

A few Buffalonians who hold an anti-Rochester grudge might answer "yes!"

;-)

But I'm not one of them.

Would it not be curiously delightful if each of these lemming-like stations imploded as a result of their internecine conflict. A four way tie for sixth, 25-54 Persons.

I personally enjoy Christmas music and I'll listen to it at the proper time, most likely shuffled from my CD player or computer's media player a day or two before Christmas.

In Buffalo, Star and WJYE are battling each other for Christmas music supremacy while WHTT and Jack maintain their respective normal formats. It will be interesting to see how each station performs as a result.

I'm still expecting Jack Buffalo to stick with their regular format, and throw in some Parody Christmas songs...like "Walking in my mother's underwear" to the tune of "Walking in a Winter wonderland" because Jack...well, you know...plays what it wants! LOL
(That song actually exists folks, I believe it's done by Bob Rivers)<P ID="signature">______________

If they play "Christmas In Jail" by the Students the answer would be yes to that statement.

I would have thought it would be smarter for Fickle to stay with the regular format because they may have gained listeners from Mix and some of the other stations. Bad choice on their part.

Fickle is acting like a station planning on changing or at least significantly modifying its format come January 1.
They haven't gotten the ratings traction they probably expected from the change from oldies to adult hits. Now, I can't say they are necessarily certain to change. But when a station doesn't get a BIG boost in either total audience or key target demos within three or four books after a major change, then another change frequently follows close behind. The one thing that could prevent that, is this question---what else can you do with a relatively limited class A signal (which doesn't cover the outer 1/3 of the market's population well)?
If they find an answer that has a good prospect for better than a 2.5 share you'll hear something else at 93.3 come the new year.

"Walkin' 'Round in Women's Underwear" is the title. Very funny stuff.

Lest we forget, Entercom has gone all Christmas on 93.3 for several years now. I don't think it is necessarily an indicator of a format change...

I'm with Scooter on this one. From all indications, Mike and his crew over at Entercom believe very strongly in Fickle, and they're not about to pull the plug on it after less than a year.

I don't think the signal issue is as bad as everyone makes it out to be, either. If Kiss can beat PXY on an even more limited class A signal, as it just did, 93.3 can win, too. It's too bad that so many people still have such vivid memories of 93.3 as an Avon signal. I think that continues to color perceptions of the new Fairport signal, which suffers most from the co-channel interference from Cobourg. Other than that, it's actually one of the better As in town (a bit behind WDKX and WZNE, but in many ways superior to WZXV, WRCI, WJZR and WKGS, and way ahead of WNVE).
