when matty retires

ok I know what your all thinking why am I bringing this up??? I'll tell you eventually the day will come that Matty retires. What is going to go there Elvis Duran seems the most likely, But with cc debt coming to ahead in a few years what options could be had?? Any and all thoughts would be helpful.

Elvis Duran is nationally-syndicated, so I think his will be the next morning show on WXKS-107.9.

And quite frankly, Clear Channel may not wait until Matt Siegal decides to retire. They could pull it off much, much sooner.

I don't think so. Matty will stay as long as he wants. Even the possibility that Billy Costa will take over for him to give a new show the same feel.

Bill Costa's gotta be almost as old as Matty.

And Elvis isn't a spring chicken, either.

I'd be curious what would happen with either show when the main host retires. In the case of Elvis Duran, the show has a large cast, and it seems like a new anchorman could be installed or promoted from within. In the case of Matty, Billy is the obvious choice, but without him... none of the show's other members strike me as the future host.

As I understand it, Matty is an institution. A cult of personality. There is literally no way to replace him; people listen to Kiss because it's Matty. And because they've listened to Matty specifically, for decades, it's become a habit. When he leaves, by definition whoever replaces him won't be part of the habit because that person will be new. The day after Matty's last day will likely see a sharp drop in Kiss's ratings no matter who takes over the chair.

(co-hosts don't really count; they don't listen for the co-host, they listen for Matty)

That said, I think Matty will be there as long as he gets good ratings (and, presumably, that translates into solid ad revenue). I would have to think that given the lofty heights Matty has occupied so long, that when he leaves things will drop so hard no matter what CC does that they have every incentive to keep him around as long as the ratings are good. I mean, I can imagine a Weekend at Bernie's situation happening.

OTOH, if the ratings plunged this year, I imagine Matty would be gone the next. There's no reason to get rid of him as long as things work, but there'll be a huge incentive to replace him quickly when/if they don't work.

I'm a 34 yr old male, started listening to Matty when WZOU was ruined into ghetto blasters. I still listen but turn the dial to sports radio when its music or ads.

After I had speculated that Clear Channel might dump Matty for the nationally-syndicated Elvis Duran "much said:

I'm not so sure.

Clear Channel may not care about his longevity or his high ratings. If the company can dump his huge salary and replace it with a nationally-syndicated morning show, they might do that, even though it would violate all logic.

When have you ever been right?

I think some things just have a way of working out. At some point there will be sweeping changes for whatever reason (even the mighty must fall), Clear Channel divests, formats change, etc. I would suspect we would see some big changes happen, and "As a result..."

My guess would be that eventual cluster changes force the issue.

Anyone hear that kid they've brought on within the past couple years? James I think his name is...young guy, any thoughts there? Maybe being groomed? Certianly would be a cheaper salary down the line.
