When "new media" goes wrong...

Some interesting fallout from the Writer's Guild strike. Michael Eisner recently called the strike "stupid." When he was later asked to clarify his remark, this is what he said, "What I was driving at was that it was a foolish time to have a strike over a business and a marketplace that is not evolved enough to even know if there is a business or a marketplace there."

The striking writers want a bigger share of royalties from use of their work in new media platforms.

"The [reuse] areas in which they are making money... I believe the producers have agreed to make a deal." Eisner says the problem is material created for the Internet, "which is neither profitable nor is it clear in what direction it's going to go." He says there is "not a profit pie" to be shared.

To drive his point home, Eisner pointed to a TV series he produced for the internet called Prom Queen. It ended up making just a few thousand dollars and its sequel lost money.

You can read all about it here: http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Wga-Strike-Watch/Michael-Eisner-Clarifies/800027645

You can also check out Prom Queen's myspace page here: http://www.myspace.com/promqueentv If you read far enough down in the comments section, you'll see the kids are pretty upset that their favorite internet show hasn't had a new episode in quite a while and most of them are oblivious to the fact that the project is dead. If you want to know how dead, check out the show's sponsor, the movie Hairspray coming to theaters July 20th. There's even a link you can click to win a trip to the premiere!

I have friends who are WGA members. Michael Eisner is a producer. I'd expect him to plead poverty. I'm sure he's doing web TV so he can throw away his money.

I'll offer a very relevant link to a commentary from Fred Jacobs. He says it well.
