Mike & everybody,
I'm still a little up in the air about getting Jack/Bob here, but I think I'd like to see it. I really like BOB in Austin. I think the "smart ass" comments are actually a little funny and are good natured (they do a good job at personifying "Bob" and making him seem like a funny, likeable guy-I find myself trying to listen to the station just to hear what will be said in between each song). At the same time, they do occassionally have personalities on the air. I've heard them regularly in the afteroons if I am in that direction. I even heard one on a Saturday morning not long ago...I can't tell if they are voice-tracked/recorded or not, but they seem funny and upbeat.
Jack in Dallas has a pretty good music selection. I listen to it online during the day (after 10am/W&J of course). The bad thing is, without the on-air personalities, the station just seems dead (actually the on-line version must be different than what is actually played on 100.3 over the air in Dallas).
Jack in Vancouver (also listenable online-only I think this is an actual live stream of the Vancouver 96.9 on-air broadcast) seems to have a good combination of what I like. They still have the funny little voiceover comments, but they also heavily employ live jocks. (One afternoon, the DJ was taking live calls on air about a huge swarm of birds that were flying all over a part of the city during PM drive time). It was really fun listening, both for that and for the music! I think if we could get something like that here, it could make everybody happy and keep the job market open for some good DJs.
I'd hate to see a good, personality-driven station (like KHJZ) be replaced by a jukebox. We've had too many good people lose work around here lately! I have a bad feeling though, if we do get a Jack/Bob station here in town (whether it be Cox, Infinity, or Radio One that brings it to us), it will end up being exactly that (a jukebox like Dallas' Jack).
On an unrelated note, I've enjoyed the music on KIOL recently. It sounds to me like they may be branching out a little (baby steps!). Unfortunately, the signal was absolutely atrocious tonight while I was driving...
