When or will Houston get a JACK or BOB?

Took a trip to Dallas this weekend and had a chance to listen to JACK, I must say its pretty impressive. I Hope houston will get a station like this. I honestly think it would do very well.

Hopefully never.
The last thing we need is ANOTHER juke box.

I could go for a jack or bob with DJ's, but I heard stuff I haven't heard on the radio in years.

I could give it a chance IF they had djs, but that is a big IF.
How many of those stations have them?
I think I might have heard about one, but that's it.

Infinity is pretty big on the Jack format at the moment and are happy with the results. They seem to be targeting their older demo stations with the flip to Jack.

I second that!
Besides I don't think Infinity has any stations to Jack up... haha. All their FMs (how many, 2?) are doing fairly well. To me Houston isn't a Jack or Bob kind of place. It wouldn't belong. Just my opinion.

Infinity is evaluating their under 10 ratings in all markets and if that demo is older, they are flipping it. Infinity is even flipping 10+ ratings in the older demo range. For Houston, that means KHJZ is on the horizon to be flipped to Jack.

JACK is coming to Houston and Infinity is leading the way. Infinity will take out their lowest performing older demo in each market and replace it with JACK. Their numbers are just too good with the JACK conversion to stop.

Why wouldn't JACK work in Houston?

I'm sure radiodial is right.

I know a lot of people on this board don't think JACK will work in Houston. I do. Since MIX was created here - for the musically all over the map Houstonians - why wouldn't JACK work? It's right up our alley. I heard JACK in Dallas and thought it was good while I received it coming back on 45.

I've been listening to JACK Dallas Online during the day after W&J. I like it and I think it has improved recently. I think Jack could work in Houston, but somebody (I think it might have been John Davis-I apologize if I'm giving credit to the wrong person) on an earlier thread brought up a good point that we might already have waters too "muddy" for Jack (since we already have KHMX, KHPT, and even KKRW and KIOL), so I don't know if there is room for Jack. I do wish KHPT would do a full conversion to Jack (or something similar). I would like it if we got "Jacked". It would be nice to have DJs on it though. JACK Online gets really dry after awhile, even with good music.

Pardon me, but I'm a native Houstonian and this market sucks as far as radio goes. The only good radio is on the AM dial. Plenty of variety and opinions. On the FM side it's a complete snoozer. I was in New Braunfels over the weekend and listened to Bob in Austin. Granted it is a "jukebox", at least they play DIFFERENT and VARIETAL tracks. I don't know how many times I have tuned off The Point because the same Simple Minds song has played. You know the 80's lasted 10 YEARS. There are more than 5 songs that were hits in that era. At least Bob covers the hits of all eras. Houston FM's have driven me to XM. I hooked it up for the first time this past weekend and I feel I have been liberated from the drab Houston FM radio dial. Funny thing though; in New Braunfels I unhooked the XM to hear the great variety of stations coming from Austin. Bob is good, 105.9 jams like no other station I have heard and some of the San Antonio stations offer better than Houston. Bottomline, bring on Bob and bring REAL RADIO to the FM side of Houston. Hey CC, Infinity and Cox: take a look at BizRadio and take a lesson-locally owned and operated and running on their own ideas fed by their listeners.

BOB-FM is fairly common after midnight to hear with a good signal. Some hours are fairly good with cuts I hadn't heard in years and some hours are honest to God trainwrecks and it was a task of will power not to change a notch over to KIOL.

There may be one or two JACK or BOB out there that have a morning drive time DJ, but nearly all are jukeboxes with a smart ass comment thrown in between songs. I'm not sure that Houston really needs a JACK with The Point and Mix.

I would be surprised if Infinity changed either of their FM stations to the JACK format. Country KILT is tied in 8th place with their competition, KKBQ. Smooth Jazz The Wave is tied with Mix for 13th place, but The Wave does very well with the demo's they are seeking. Infinity would be taking a big chance flipping The Wave to JACK, personally I don't think the format would pull very good ratings after a couple of months. Houston already has plenty of jukebox stations and sure doesn't need another one.

About the only station I thought might go the JACK route was Radio One's KROI, but for the first time in 6 months the ratings went up 0.3, now the station is still in the bottom section of the ratings at 24th place, but Radio One may stick with the Spanish-language format for at least a year now.

I don't see a JACK in Houston's future, but then I'm not wearing my glasses.

Mike_O, I always enjoy reading your posts. I've learned a lot from your point of view both technical and music format wise.

But............. **big smile**

I believe Infinity is going through their inventory of large market holdings and flipping the older demos to JACK. For an Infinity Broadcasting radio station to be tied with another radio station really doesn't matter if it's in 13th place and an older demo. They're flipping them.

A good example of this is what happened in Chicago and New York. JMHO.

Radiodial, Thank You for the compliment, I read all the posts on the Houston board and you have many excellent posts and points, this post of yours definitely is an excellent example. There are some major factors I ignored. You picked up on it right away and set me straight about Infinity's strategy.

You could be 100% correct. Both the Chicago and New York stations were in the top ten if I recall correctly. I could be wrong, I have made several major f-ups the last few days. While I really don't listen to The Wave very often, at least there are live air personalities there. I guess I'm not too thrilled at the idea of another jukebox coming on the air. Before long it will be difficult to find a live person on any music station.

Houston radio sucks the worst it ever has now in the 27 years I have lived here. I don't see how a JACQUE format could make it any worse, except it is replacing a format with live bodies.

You are right though, Infinity is flipping stations to JACK with the same passion that Clear Channel is flipping stations to Hurban like Mega. Considering that Mega is tied for 6th place with KTRH in the Phase II Trend that came out today, CC made a wise choice when they killed Rock 101 and tried the new Hurban format. I never thought I would use the words "wise choice" and "Clear Channel" in the same sentence.

Mike & everybody,
I'm still a little up in the air about getting Jack/Bob here, but I think I'd like to see it. I really like BOB in Austin. I think the "smart ass" comments are actually a little funny and are good natured (they do a good job at personifying "Bob" and making him seem like a funny, likeable guy-I find myself trying to listen to the station just to hear what will be said in between each song). At the same time, they do occassionally have personalities on the air. I've heard them regularly in the afteroons if I am in that direction. I even heard one on a Saturday morning not long ago...I can't tell if they are voice-tracked/recorded or not, but they seem funny and upbeat.

Jack in Dallas has a pretty good music selection. I listen to it online during the day (after 10am/W&J of course). The bad thing is, without the on-air personalities, the station just seems dead (actually the on-line version must be different than what is actually played on 100.3 over the air in Dallas).

Jack in Vancouver (also listenable online-only I think this is an actual live stream of the Vancouver 96.9 on-air broadcast) seems to have a good combination of what I like. They still have the funny little voiceover comments, but they also heavily employ live jocks. (One afternoon, the DJ was taking live calls on air about a huge swarm of birds that were flying all over a part of the city during PM drive time). It was really fun listening, both for that and for the music! I think if we could get something like that here, it could make everybody happy and keep the job market open for some good DJs.

I'd hate to see a good, personality-driven station (like KHJZ) be replaced by a jukebox. We've had too many good people lose work around here lately! I have a bad feeling though, if we do get a Jack/Bob station here in town (whether it be Cox, Infinity, or Radio One that brings it to us), it will end up being exactly that (a jukebox like Dallas' Jack).

On an unrelated note, I've enjoyed the music on KIOL recently. It sounds to me like they may be branching out a little (baby steps!). Unfortunately, the signal was absolutely atrocious tonight while I was driving...

Radiodial,

I just went and checked the ratings for Infinity's WCBS-FM and WJMK out of curosity to see what they were when flipped to JACK. You are so right about about Infinity and flipping to JACK.
----WCBS-FM #9 3.1 and flipped to Jack
----WJMK #12t 3.0 and flipped to Jack

Personally I can't fathom having the #9 station in NYC and changing formats or having the #12 station in Chicago and flipping formats. The Wave #13 with a 2.9, goodbye Wave, Hello Jack. I missed that one big time.

Mike
