When Pittsburgh Radio Was

Was born and raised on Long Island, but thanks to a slew of family on my father's side living in Western PA, Pittsburgh became my 2nd home. Oh, those chilly winter evenings in November, the family gathered around the Thanksgiving dinner table, and me breaking away after dessert and cutting a Bee-line to my cousin's radio to listen to top-40 jock Weird Beard. Can't remember the calls-- may have been a Pittsburgh ABC affiliate.

13Q and WPEZ-1973 to '79.

I was a college student at Fairmont State College (now University) from 1973-1977. Loved 'PEZ, but we did have several good FM's coming on line through that time. 'CLG was relatively new, and don't remember when 'VAQ signed on. Anyway, good times with WPEZ!

I worked with Charlie Peterson when he was PD at KDKA in 1970; my first radio job. I'll always remember him telling me, tongue in cheek I assume, that the secret of good radio was simple; "play the hits and talk dirty". That worked for me at least a couple times in later years.
