I second that! Hot 105/107 was what I wish was still here and pray to God that this kind of station comes back to C-bus someday. Channel Z was really cool for it's time when they were on the air and before their move to 105.7. I believe it was New Years Eve that I had the privlage to listen to Channel Z and The Big Wazoo hit the Columbus airwaves on the same night. That was the last time I was excited about Columbus radio. Those were also the Jacor days and before Crap Channel took over America.
______________

I'm going to give away my age here.....When WCOL was "1230 The New WCOL". When those of us who couldn't get WCOL at night used to listen to Dick Biondi and Art Roberts on WLS or Cousin Brucie on WABC. There was WCFL or WBZ if the Great 98 or 77 Music Radio weren't coming in on any particular night. Man...that was REAL RADIO!

It's Young Street, which is actually more like an alley. They were in the same building as Great Trails' co-owned WCOL. At some point, they put in a window-enclosed studio on the Broad Street side where you could watch Spook Beckman doing his WCOL talk show. In fact, I think their address was officially changed to Broad at that point.

It seems as if we covered a lot of Columbus (and distant 50k AM) radio memories in a couple threads in mid and late April. I already see some new and interesting memories here, but I'm going to have to sit this round out myself because I end up spending way too much time tripping down -- and posting about -- memory lane! Once or twice a year is enough for me! In fact, given my lack of self-discipline on that count, I'd better try to force myself to avoid reading any further in this thread if it continues. Next time...
______________

the old WCOL studios is now a Blimpie sub shop.....i remember going to that studio to pick up prizes from Mark "The Shark"....i also remember WCOL trying to take on WTVN with local talk....other memories for me are the early days of 1460 the Fan...with Skip Mosic and Dom Tiberi....92X and "the Power Pig" also bring back memories for me....other memories off hand: 99.7's "Magic" classic rock format with Perry Stone and the noon time request show with Bonnie (i cant remember her last name)....Adam Kontras and his entertaining overnight shows on WTVN, until he totally went out of control and got canned....Thats all i can think of now....

I'm a little leery about tripping down memory lane too often, too. But it's too irresistable not to mention Pat & Wags of WLVQ (1982-1986). Also those late-night AMs that were so influential like WLS, WCFL (both Chicago), WBZ Boston...254-5678...their phone number...part of a jingle), KYW Philadelphia (KYW news time...). It was owned by Westinghouse I believe.

Also, WABC, WNBC and WCBS. All great stuff. I think the advent of a new radio band...HD...will put us back to the 1960s when AM operators were trying to figure out what to do with their FM signals. Now AM/FM operators will be figuring out...I'm sure...innovative ways to use the available channels on their split signals of HD. Of course, enough HD radios (like FMs back in the day) would have to be available in the marketplace. And word has it HD will come fast...and will be the perfect competition for pay radio. If broadcasters do it the way many think, you'll hear basically what satellite radio is offering on some of these new channels HD radio will provide. HD will be available in new cars like satellite is now.

Oh, wait, my favorite station of all time...my handle...sorry...C K L W! (Winsor, Ontario, Canada but positioned itself as a Detroit station on 800AM). The era 1964-1976 (covering Motown, Beatles...and K.C. & the Sunshine Band) was particularly strong and memorable. But "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks in 1974 and "Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain & Tennille in 1975 every two hours...whoa...but CK managed to play something I LOVED right after those terrible minutes were up!

So look out...AM/FM/HD might have us reliving those so-called "good-old days" once again!
