I'm a little leery about tripping down memory lane too often, too. But it's too irresistable not to mention Pat & Wags of WLVQ (1982-1986). Also those late-night AMs that were so influential like WLS, WCFL (both Chicago), WBZ Boston...254-5678...their phone number...part of a jingle), KYW Philadelphia (KYW news time...). It was owned by Westinghouse I believe.
Also, WABC, WNBC and WCBS. All great stuff. I think the advent of a new radio band...HD...will put us back to the 1960s when AM operators were trying to figure out what to do with their FM signals. Now AM/FM operators will be figuring out...I'm sure...innovative ways to use the available channels on their split signals of HD. Of course, enough HD radios (like FMs back in the day) would have to be available in the marketplace. And word has it HD will come fast...and will be the perfect competition for pay radio. If broadcasters do it the way many think, you'll hear basically what satellite radio is offering on some of these new channels HD radio will provide. HD will be available in new cars like satellite is now.
Oh, wait, my favorite station of all time...my handle...sorry...C K L W! (Winsor, Ontario, Canada but positioned itself as a Detroit station on 800AM). The era 1964-1976 (covering Motown, Beatles...and K.C. & the Sunshine Band) was particularly strong and memorable. But "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks in 1974 and "Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain & Tennille in 1975 every two hours...whoa...but CK managed to play something I LOVED right after those terrible minutes were up!
So look out...AM/FM/HD might have us reliving those so-called "good-old days" once again!
