When stations change jingles and sounders...

... without flipping/tweaking or changing calls ....

Why do they?
How have you, the listener, reacted?
Got any inside info on a jingle/sounder change?

Yesterday newstalker WDEL Wilmington, DE implemented new sounders. I liked the old ones better. I doubt I'll listen to 'DEL anymore except when absolutely necessary.

Jingles and sounders need to be refreshed periodically. I doubt there's a tried and true formula for that, but it does need to be done.

ABC did this a few years back with their World News Tonight and radio newscast theme. They took music that was written in the 1970s and updated it with a contemporary arrangement. CBS Radio did the same thing some time ago - their top of hour newscast sounder was iconic, but had sounded very old fashioned for some time. The change was for the better.

The same holds true for the overall station imaging package. I listened to some of my old air checks not long ago and I was surprised out how out-of-date the news and traffic sounders were. They were OK in 1987, but it would be inconceivable for my old station to keep using them today.

It is jarring to hear new jingles and sounders, especially if you liked the old ones. But it just takes getting used to.

Would you really stop listening to a station on that basis alone, assuming you liked the overall programming? Just curious.

The company I work for bought a new package last year after using the previous package for about 10 years. This time we bought a custom designed network package, so that (in theory) all our network talk stations would sound almost the same.

Here in Melbourne, having the number one station in the market, we worked hard on the re-launch. The package contained about 6 different styles. We mixed versions of every style, for every show. All up, it took us about 4 weeks from when the project first started, throught the New Years Day launch, and mopping up bits for shows that followed during that week. All up I think there was about 3000 bits that needed re-doing.

Listener reaction was fantastic. I remember taking a call from a friend in another market, asking me what the hell happened? He, was a fan of the idear of gradual introduction, which I can't understand.

Anyway, 12 months, and one frequency change (in which about 1500 bits had to change again) down the track, we are still number 1. The thing that had our production manager scratching his head was, what other stations in our network were doing. They all went for the gradual approach, and 12 months later, from what I have heard still haven't used half the stuff in the package.

I agree, imaging needs to be refreshed. Depending on the format, they can stretch out how long they use a package. News and Soft AC and literally go forever because their "sound" (music playlist or programming) doesn't change much from day-to-day.

CHR/Pop should seriously look into changing sweepers and jingles out every 18 months or so, just because the sound of pop music is constantly evolving. Especially if their competition sounds's imaging sounds great and fresh, nothing is worse than a CHR sounding stale.

Some examples of how long imaging lasts from my market, Salt Lake City:

News
KSL 1993-1997, 1997-2001, 2001-Present

CHR
KZHT 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2003, 2003-2005, 2005-Present

AC
KSFI 1993-2006, 2006-Present (Was sounding really stale....)
KBEE 1996-1999, 2000-2002, 2002-Present

Depends on how soon the shock value of the new imaging wears off. ;D This past Monday I gave WDEL's new imaging another try and allowed myself to get used to it. The new ID jingle sounds like an alteration of WBBM's. The old imaging was used for about 5-6 years. I guess I'm just jealous because I'm not the one calling the shots. Wonder which consultant was used. :)

10 years, Lee? 13 years for one Salt Lake image, henry? Even I agree that's too long.

WDEL also has a new announcer. The previous one still does vo's on two Baltimore outlets: Hearst's WBAL-AM and Scripps' WMAR-TV. I guess he's a "national" vo man. What's his name?
