The subject line has to do with 1540 ZNS Nassau being off the air for the past month.

Last night I caught a station that, as far as I know, has no authority to operate at night---in addition to possibly another one last week *also* without authority. I won't name these stations.

Is the FCC allowing this, about stations operating when the cat's away?

With a perennially short-staffed and underfunded Enforcement Bureau, the FCC acts based on complaints. There are very few stations on 1540 in the US with protected night signals, so unless WDCD or KXEL complains, the FCC is unlikely to act.
 
I'm thinking that somebody is firing up on daytime power under WSM at night lately. It's been very consistent in the Chicago area for week or so. Could be seasonal, or maybe not... anyway, I don't like it!

Are you sure its not just WFAN's IBOC signal. Skywave gets stronger this time of the year, bringing both the good and the bad. I get WBBM's IBOC blasting in where I am near Watertown, NY. It can be heard behind 77 WABC's signal and it takes out my local's 790 nighttime signal. During the summer this wasn't as much of an issue.

By the way, WZAP 690 Bristol, VA was observed signing off tonight at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET) ...I think it's way past sunset by then in Bristol, VA...no High School football game...oops!!!
 
The cat has returned (ZNS 1 1540 Nassau) tonight. Not sure if it's running its full power.

In our dreams will we ever hear ZNS here in northern IL...with KXEL blasting in here, and WDCD and/or CHIN in the mix, the only way possible is ZNS accidentally operating omnidirectional or a huge Aurora Borealis knocking out the skywaves of these aforementioned signals...

I heard them on Friday night loud and clear in Upstate NY. An announcer was telling people they could still listen online and that they were signing off for the day, followed by an ID , and this was at 7PM ET. A little after 7 they went off air, and then you could hear WELD playing a football game loud and clear.

Ive been finding Friday night a good time to DX since many AM stations that do sports aren't running syndicated programming, so its easier to get an ID. I can usually hear the name of the schools playing each other, do a quick Google search and find the game schedule along with then station(s) playing it. I also think many of them stay on daytime or critical hours power too long. It will be interesting next week since it will get dark an hour earlier but games will still be played at the same time.
 
I have tried for years to hear ZNS in the Chicago area, but no luck. The only time I ever picked them up was when I was visiting friends on the island of Eleuthera. They came in fine there.

I've never once heard IBOC noise from a distant station. Our locals here in Tampa turn off their IBOC at night. I assumed most all stations did that too.
 
I've heard it near El Cajon, CA, from several distant (200 mile plus) stations, including 740-KCBS San Francisco, CA, 840 KXNT North Las Vegas, NV, 1160 KSL Salt Lake City, UT, and on 1580 KMIK Tempe, AZ (on that one it's strong enough to nearly wipe out 1570 and 1590), just to name a few off the top of my head.
