When there's PBP conflict, who gets priority?

Play-by-play conflicts involving two Philadelphia Phillies affiliates, both of which pre-empted tonight's "crucial" Phightin's/Amazin's tilt at Shea (won by the Phils BTW), inspired this thread.

WEEU-830 Reading, PA will nix the Phils for high school football, which it airs every Fri. night in season. Tonight's game was IIRC Exeter at Wilson (both schools are on opposite sides of suburban Reading, in Exeter Township [east] and the West Lawn section of Spring Township [west]).

also -

WDEL-1150 Wilmington, DE gives priority to college football's "other" Wolverines, the ones from Wesley College in Dover (qualifiers for the D-III final four each of the last two years, stopped in the semis both times by Wisconsin-Whitewater). Tonight Wesley played Widener, from Chester, PA.

OK folks, your turn.

WJDX Jackson, MS: NASCAR takes priority over the Atlanta Braves. But they both take a backseat if the New Orleans Saints are on.

WSMB Memphis: They just recently acquired local rights to University of Tennessee sports. The Volunteers take priority over the St. Louis Cardinals. During the Tennessee-California game, the Cards were moved to WMC-790 AM.

WSB Atlanta: The Georgia Bulldogs took priority when they also had the Braves and Hawks. If the Braves were to conflict with the Bulldogs, the Braves were moved to B98.5 and the Hawks to 97.1. Since the Braves and Hawks are no longer on WSB, there are no more conflicts.

Bonneville (KTAR AM 620/FM 92.3, plus KMVP 860 until a couple of weeks ago) has rights to the Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Suns, and ASU football/men's basketball. Their priorities are, IIRC:

D'backs/Cardinals: D'backs on AM, Cards on FM.
D'backs/Suns: D'backs on FM, Suns on AM.
D'backs/ASU: D'backs on FM, ASU on AM.
Suns/Cards: Suns on AM, Cards on FM.
ASU/Suns: Suns on FM, ASU on AM.
Cards/ASU: Not a likely scenario except for maybe men's hoops on Sunday (formerly on KMVP), but my guess is that the Cards would be on FM and ASU would be on AM.

But three-way conflicts are possible if the Cards are in the NFL postseason in January (yeah, right! ::) ) or if ASU is in the NCAA Tourney in March. You'd then have the slim possibility of a Suns/Cards/ASU conflict in the first case or a Suns/Diamondbacks/ASU conflict in the second. KMVP is no longer part of the picture. Bonneville also owns KPKX 98.7 but that station hasn't been used as sports overflow in many years. Could happen again.

In Indianapolis WIBC has the Colts, Pacers, Fever and Indiana University Football. Breakdown goes as follow by the wibc.com schedule

Pacers/Colts: Pacers WIBC/Colts WLHK
Pacers/IU Football: Pacers WIBC/ IU Football WLHK
Colts/Fever: Colts: WIBC/WHLK |Fever Either WSYW/WXLW/WNDE pending on conflicts on those 3 stations

WNDE has Nascar, Reds and Purdue University
Reds/Nascar: Nascar bumps reds off totally
Reds/Purdue: Purdue bumps Reds off totally
in case of Fever bump over and nascar: Nascar is out of the water in that case

Mike, apparently you are a WNBA fan, because you failed to note for those not in the know* that the Fever are Indy's WNBA franchise. 8) ;D

*Like me, who just Googled to find out.

In Cleveland, the Clear Channel cluster has the rights to the Indians, Cavaliers and Browns. N/T WTAM/1100 is the flagship for the Indians and Cavs, while rock WMMS/100.7 is the primary station for the Browns.

That being said, WMMS is often used for PBP spillover purposes as WTAM is the sole AM signal in the cluster. Usually the conflicts happen like so:

* Indians/Cavs when both are in regular season: Indians-WTAM, Cavs-WMMS
* Indians/Cavs during NBA post-season: Indians-WMMS, Cavs-WTAM

Browns games, following the conclusion of the Indians regular season, will be simulcast (or "simul-BLAST" as they put it) on WMMS and WTAM... and yet, WTAM will air seperate pre-and-post games shows away from the network.

-----------------------------

Over at crosstown sports-talk WKNR/850, the Good Karma-owned station now will occasionally use daytimer-only WWGK/1540 for some spillover purposes, like so:

* Ohio State basketball/Cleveland State basketball (yes, that does exist!): CSU-WKNR, OSU-WWGK
* Local postgame call-in shows following either Indians or Cavs games on weekdays (prior to 6pm) will air on WWGK, while WKNR maintains their regular lineup.
* Any PBP WWGK is unable to air after signoff will air on WKNR instead. Applies to Notre Dame football, college football games from WW1, and NASCAR races.

-----------------------------

Finally, a number of regional channels (WEOL-Elyria, WAKR-Akron, WFUN-Ashtabula, WLEC-Sandusky, WMAN-Mansfield, WHBC-Canton) will not air Indians games on Fridays when high school football season rolls around, which has been the case pretty much forever.

WWL New Orleans has Saints/LSU.

Saints always stay on the AM 870, with LSU moving to 1350 (formerly wsmb). Now with WWL on FM they may do something different but the conflict hasn't arisen yet.

WIST has Zephyrs (AAA baseball) and Tulane. Tulane season opener football conflicted with a Zephyrs playoff game with the Zephyrs moving to a local FM and Tulane staying on the AM.

Hornets don't have this problem, they are on a Urban music with no conflicts

Back when the Seattle Supersonics were on KJR 950, when there was a Sonics game and a Washington Men's Basketball game at the same time KJR would have the Sonics and KHHO 850 would usually get the Huskies games. A couple of times Washington Football games would conflict with early season Sonics games and KJR would get the Huskies with KUBE 93.3 carrying the Sonics. Also, back when KIRO 710 had the rights to both the Seahawks and Mariners, when there was a conflict KIRO would usually carry the Seahawks with either KNWX 770 or KMPS 1300 (back in the late 80's) carrying the Mariners. Kind of interesting because I listened to game 5 of the 1995 ALDS a while back on XM 175 and the station ID was KNWX 770.

Here in Chicago...

WGN 720 AM - Cubs baseball over Northwestern football (NU would be either in progress or tape delay after the game). Northwestern basketball has no in-station competition during the season.

WSCR 670 AM - I'm sure it is White Sox over Blackhawks, but Blackhawks have not made the playoffs in a while, so it has not been a problem. Blackhawks over MNF/SNF/DePaul basketball. All overflow programming was on WCKG 105.9 FM, but WCKG just flipped to Fresh 105.9. A DePaul game and last week's MNF game ended up on WIND 560 AM. I'm sure that is has become the new overflow station. On occasion, a MNF/SNF game is not on any station here. Occasionally has Northern Illinois games.

WIND 560 AM - Illinois football/basketball (likely with priority), UIC basketball, and overflow games.

WLS 890 AM - Notre Dame football, no competition.

WBBM 780 AM - Bears football, definitely no competion.

WBIG 1280 AM Aurora - Kane County Cougars baseball is the priority (almost all games, except for a couple, in which a shopping show marathon has priority [baseball on Cougars' website only for those days], Illinois State football/basketball, high school football/basketball. It is also a secondary market for Bears football. A couple of years ago, it was a secondary station for the White Sox (mainly weekend day games). When they made the World Series, it had the ESPN Radio feed. The remainder of the time it is talk/Fox Sports Radio.

WMVP 1000 AM - Bulls basketball w/no in-station competition. Last season, had the entire NCAA tournament, except the Opening Round game. I'm sure that if the Bulls are playing while the NCAA games are going on, the NCAA games will be on another station.

WFAN-660 in New York gives priority in this order: Mets (baseball), Giants (NFL), NJ Devils (NHL), NJ Nets (NBA), St. John's (men's college basketball). NFL, college sports and NHL from WW1 air if there's no overlap; NFL playoffs always get priority on the Fan.

This Sunday brings a major-league conflict -- St. John's at 4, Giants at 4:15, Devils at 5, Nets at 6. The Giants will be on the Fan, the Devils on 77 WABC, the Nets on Bloomberg Radio 11-3-0 and St. John's on the WFAN website.

The best way to keep track is via the WFAN and team websites. New York newspapers aren't always that reliable in listing which team is heard where.

at Emmis in Indianapolis they have the Colts, Pacers, Indiana Football and Basketball and the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400

Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 always on 1070 (Soon to be the Fan) and 97.1 Hank FM

Colts always on 97.1 Hank FM and Non Pacer prememtions (which is rare for sundays except for 12/2/07) 1070 WIBC

Pacers ALways 1070 WIBC

Indiana Football on 1070 WIBC except prempted by Indiana Pacers Preseason and regular Season games then they move to 97.1 Hank FM

Indiana Basketball on 97.1 Hank FM except for a very rare Colts premption then it will move to 93.1 the soon to be new 93.1 WIBC FM

WNDE has some problems but its rare with its Purdue, Nascar, Reds, and WW1 NFL

Reds are aired for most night games. Only weekend day games are aired on WNDE unless going up against Nascar which then then all reds games are out no matter what. Purdue gets over the top of reds and i also believe over nascar as well. Back when WNDE had the pacers and Purdue and also had 1430 am in the house WNDE would air the pacers and Purdue got boince to 1430 but prior to 1430 era i believe purdue didnt air in indy

WWI MNF airs over the reds on WNDE as well.

LOL the fun one to firgure out is at clear channel Cincinnati with CC owning the Reds, Bengals, Xavier, U of Cincinnati, U of Kentucky, U of Louisville

Reds are always on 700 WLW

Bengals always on 1530 WCKY and 92.5 WOFX and non Reds GameDays on 700 WLW

U of Cincy always on 700 WLW unless prempted by Reds or Bengals then i believe it moves to 1360 WSAI

Xavier on 700 when no other broadcast other wise i believe its 550 WKRC or 1360 WSAI

U of Kentucky 1530 WCKY i dont believe U of K ever leaves 1530

U Of Louisville 1530 WCKY unless prempted by U of K then its to 1360

ESPN Radio Baseball is on 1530 WCKY unless prempted then its not even moved i believe unless they decided to put it on 1360 as of last yeart

Westwood one NFL Broadcasts for SNF/MNF and the NFL Network games on 1530 unless prempted by Bengals Broadcast (which means no movement to another station since due to contractual deal). Sunday Afternoon games not aired on 1530 unless its a bengals bye week
