When will Christmas come to Greenville?

It's almost time for Christmas music....which brings the question, when will it start?

If last year is any indication, I suspect Magic will go all-Christmas sometime between 11/5 and 11/9. Last year it was a bit of surprise and they deviated from doing it at the typical time, on Friday at 5pm to sometime mid-week at 7pm as part of a contest.

If MY goes all-Christmas (99% sure they will), I'm guessing it will be sometime later in the month like last year. All-Christmas in Greenville, SC must be a classic example of ratings not always equaling revenue. This is one of the only markets I have ever seen where every year, at least recently, stations' ratings remain stagnant or fall when Christmas music is played, yet they always do it.

Although you're probably right about MY, I still think it's a big mistake if they do. They're already struggling maintaining whatever Hot AC audience they have and stand to lose even more by going all-Christmas.

Well,...I guess this is 'spose to be fun, but (To me) anytime that commercial FM's sacrifice their Fall book to Dumb, but Festive Trendiness,...we all loose! However, from the business side, both MAGIC & MY are already loosing their ass, it might behooooooove them both to venture into the...Holly Jolly(Oh, by golly have a...).
If MY wants to take the time off to right the boat with their new/year-old already format, then I understand. MAGIC stands the most to gain here, and it wouldn't hurt them to overhaul their format, during their down-time. Other than Chuck FM, the AC listener in this market is drastically underserved! If Programmers would discard the whims of the labels, and forge their own playlists, some ground could be recovered. There is more than enough new Pop product out there to cover all the bases. Hall & Oates have been self-released for years, and Aerosmith just announce that their next album will be such. Most artists today are signing only distribution deals.
There is some truely amazing music out there, denied airplay, due to the politics therein!

December 25th?

Yes, please let it be 12/25!!! Although I am not Christian (Wiccan, FWIW), it really does dilutes the meaning of the holiday by going All-Christmas when we haven't celebrated Thanksgiving yet!!!

Remember back in the good ole days when radio would usually play just a single Christmas song in afternoon drive on the day AFTER Thanksgiving and let it build from there? I know it was back in the day when there were less choices for entertainment and less competitors, but I still stand by that going All-Christmas well before December 25th is just too much.

Well, it looks like MY 102.5 is going to play all-Christmas music according to their Facebook page.

We know how well that went over last year...

what cc and entercom have not realized is that consumers that buy christmas gifts can listen to other music and still think about christmas

It's The Fresh, New Stale, Old, Holiday Sound Of My 102.5. HURRAY!!! Oh...big whoop. ::)

Yeah,...and if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his ass so hard!

Yes, it is most certainly...about staying afloat. However, in my book, if you Programmed the damn thing correctly the other ten months, then you could coast,...instead of Grinching your listeners every year!

Hell,...put it in Park from 2-months, no one's listening anyway.
It ain't like it's a 10-share!

So Say-eth The Sheppard, So Say-eth The Flock,

The answer to the question in the subject line is TODAY. Magic 98.9 flipped to all-Christmas around 1 pm. How long until WMYI follows?

MY has a Christmas stream online and says they'll go on-air "closer" to the holidays. Hopefully that's later rather than sooner. Again, still think it's a mistake for their "fresh" format, but whatever.

I agree. They had one of their worst books in ages during the Christmas music period. It obviously doesn't mix well with their format. I think they waited until the week of Thanksgiving last year.

I still don't think all-Christmas is big enough here for there to be two commercial stations to be doing it, but whatever.

According to 102.5's Facebook page, they will go all-Christmas by the weekend.
Stupid move. If I were going to do it, I would have done it right after Magic did.

I've been hearing a lot of people talking about all-Christmas music and Magic, and even heard it a couple of places today. Hard to believe people could listen to it for 6 weeks

I think I heard some new jingles on Magic earlier. Nice touch

Yeah, probably will just plummet their ratings some more. Glad MY isn't my main source for radio as it was at this point last year.

WMYI makes the switch Friday morning.  Obviously, a reaction to Magic.

Which to me, is actually the wrong reaction. If they want to be "fresh", they should be doing all they can to differentiate themselves from Magic. But what do I know? Obvioiusly, MY's made all the right moves since their flip.  What radio station wouldn't want lower ratings? ;)

It doesn't seem right to me either.

WMUU is still around, at least as of Monday. Their Christmas music (assuming they're not web-only by that time) is quite different from what the others do, though.

Why not do it yesterday? That's really stupid.

Everybody I hear talk about Christmas music and refers to "when will 'they' start playing Christmas music" and "the Christmas radio station" is talking about Magic these days. MY going all-Christmas is like a little kid running after a bigger kid saying "me too!" "Don't forget about me!" They are an afterthought to most Christmas listeners.
