When Will Lite Flip To All-Christmas, And Who Will Compete With Them?

So what if it's exactly three months before Christmas Day, it's never too early to start speculating about when how early lite-FM will change to an all-Christmas format this year!

And discuss if Fresh 102.7 will once again engage in a yuletide battle with them.

If I remember correctly WCBS-FM did well in the ratings last year playing all Christmas music. I hope they won't do it again, but people in the radio business are out for the almight dollar. CBS radio hoped that Lite-FM listeners not interested in all Christmas music would tune into Fresh and stay there permanently. In any event Christmas music should not be played until after Thanksgiving.

More people would probably check out Fresh if they played Christmas music than if they stuck with their regular format. As for CBS-FM, they did get a boost, but not a particularly huge one...not nearly as much as Lite FM. CBS-FM is truly the only game in town in its format, and wouldn't be hurt by sticking with it instead of being the second fiddle in the Christmas music battle.

If you look at the big picture, though, at least one CBS-owned station more or less competed with Lite for most of the last several years. Of course, most of these years, it was 102.7...

I really hope this year NOW 92.3 doesn't flip to Christmas. I don't like hearing Christmas songs recorded after I was born.

when was fresh all christmas ??

I think its was 2004 before Blink came on. It was Christmas 102.7. I'm not sure if I have the year right though. Also I remember 955 PLJ going all christmas, don't recall what year that was, but I enjoyed there mix of christmas songs more upbeat then LITE. Wonder if they go all christmas this year?

i think your right it was before blink signed on

i do remember PLJ went all christmas i think that was in 2000 then they never did it agian

PLJ went all-Christmas in 2004.

Speculation only: WLTW begins Santa-tizing on Thanksgiving Day; WRXP joins them on Black Friday going "esoteric singer-songwriter Christmas," with new 101.9 (non-music) format to follow after the holidays. Speculation only!

102.7 never did as Fresh. Indeed, once before the Blink era, although I believe they did so another time as "Mix 102.7." But not as Fresh. And, for that matter, 101.1 never did as Jack-FM.

102.7 went all Christmas between the Blink era and the launch of Mix 102.7. It was basically an extended stunt, except they got three times the ratings that Blink did (and the same as Mix!).

And indeed in December 2006, they increased the holiday music on Mix 102.7, while at the same time, letting go Michelle Visage, Carol Ford and others in anticipation for the switch to Fresh (this according to Wikipedia.)

So while Mix 102.7 didn't go full-blown Christmas, they were quite "bah humbug" behind the scenes...

102.7 was Talk for the Christmas season of 2002, and then stunted with CHR from mid-January to April 10th, 2003. It was Blink from April 10th to November 13th, then it was Christmas music "The New 102.7" until 10:27 AM on December 26th, then it was Mix 102.7.

From what I recall, 102.7 flipped to the pre-Blink, twelve-song playlist format the day after the Super Bowl, January 27.

It's too early for Christmas music, you guys! Let's get through Halloween and Thanksgiving first. If they want to start the Christmas music, let them wait until 6 a.m. on Black Friday!
