When will Power 106 become Power 105.9?

Mostly everyone has digital tuners now, and they tune into KPWR at 105.9, not 106.0. It seems that all other radio stations give exact dial postions now-a-days, so to me Power 106 is behind the times!

True, but why would Emmis mess with a brand name thats been in place since 1986.

There's no point. It's all about Arbitron - they get credit for 106 and 105.9. Why does it matter?

KRTH is "K-Earth 101" - why become "K-Earth 101.1"

It happend to big 106 in Miami

And why did KOST call themselves KOST 103, when KSRF was at 103.1?

Don't a whole lot of stations nationwide do this?

I have wondered sometimes how the listeners of some stations catering to less intellectually adept audiences (like the ones who say "790... is this AM or FM?") actually find a station imaged as, for example, "106", when it's actually on 105.9 or 106.1, or in a few rare cases, 106.3 or 105.7. That's probably why we invented the SCAN button.

103 Jamz Norfolk VA is really 102.9 . Kiss 108 Boston is really 107.9 . Hot 97 New York is really 97.1 .

Oh I see theres still stations out there that currently round up to the next whole frequency. Those stations that drop the "point 1" are alright in my book: k-earth 101, 91X, Hot 97, etc. Well, thx for the replies!

Any time you move away from the exact frequency and licensed calls, there is some opportunity for lost credit. Many listeners write down aberrated versions of names, talent or dial positions. If there are two or more close matches, Arbitron goes into ascription and splits the quarter hours.

Power probably feels they have a safe risk, as only about 30 diaries out of over 1,500 that mentioned power wrote in "106" alone. The vast majority wrote 105.9 followed by Power 106 followed by Power 105.9. At such point that they feel that there is loss of significant quarter hours, they would have to consider going to 105.9 instead of 106.

Kiss (Boston), Hot, and Power are all so established that the audience knows where to find the station, as others have said. In addition, adding a .1 or .3 or .5 to a station's name is easier than changing the station's name to "Power 105.9" or "Kiss 107.9", as personalities are essentially changing the station's frequency, rather than just adding more detail.

Many stations like KOST, or WODS in Boston, or KRTH have all added the .whatever over the years. But there aren't too many, other than the noted WBGG Fort Lauderdale-Miami, that have rounded down to whatever.9

(Didn't Denver have Y-108 on the 107.5 frequency? That's a bit of a stretch)

And Y-100 Miami is 100.7<P ID="signature">______________

It would be a mistake because it's all about branding and name recognition.
Power106 is very simple and everyone knows what it is.
Go to "Power105.9" and some people might think it's a different station.

I think much of the .this and .that stuff has to do with stations trying to sound different or come up with new names. KFMB FM was B100 for years, then it became Star100.7, now it's 100.7 Jack FM. All three names are very distinct. There's no reason for KPWR to change their name, it would cause more trouble than it would be worth.

As you say, folks apparently know where to tune to get Power 106. If the name's been in place for so long, why change it if that's what folks write in the Arbitron book?

That is not what they write in the book. The leading entry is 105.9 alone, about 20 to one over just 106. The listeners know it is 105.9.

Well, even more reason to not make a change, eh?

Power 106 rolls off the tongue moreso that Power 105.9, IMO.
