When will WBAP get it?

I agree Steve, however the afternoon drive with the news, sports, etc is what i listen to,unless there is a ranger game on.

Love him or hate him, Mark Davis is, at this time, THEE local talk show host of record.

The real question is why doesn't KRLD acknowledge this and simply do what it takes to hire him away from WBAP. They'll never get Rush, but money talks (pun intended).

I just don't understand how KRLD continues in mediocrity and is essentially handing midday talk over to WBAP.
No offense, but KRLD is a high school team playing against the pro's. It's time to step up and get really serious (spend some money) and get on a level playing field. There was a time when KRLD was a top station. What is the point of difference? Talent. They had it then, they don't now. How can it be so obvious, yet so missed. Curious, considering CBS usually spends what it takes to get it done elsewhere.

CBS-DALLAS has lost or done away with some pretty good managers over the past 6 years and kept and hired some real questionable people from what i've heard. I hear some of CONVICT Brian Ongaro's cronies are still at Fitzugh

As for talk show hosts i think KRLD's Charlie Jones is quite good. At first listen he doesan't make a huge impression but listen to him over a few months. The guy has incredible history knowledge and debates the issues without yelling or talking down to the listeners. Beats the hell out of Mark Levin, and that god awful Midnight trucking network on WBAP.

WBAP was so competent for so many years. The formula worked just fine, and then they decided to start tinkering with it and tinkering with it some more. You are all correct, I believe, who think it should have remained a Dallas-talented news station, and kept the extraordinary talent necessary to stay at the top.

The all-night truck show is probably a good idea, but those guys are consistently complaining about everything that's not Republican. I'm a Republican, and I don't want to hear their pontifications, so I can't imagine what those on the other side think.

But then I think to myself, I've got to cut them some slack. What are they going to talk about for 4 or 5 hours? Trucks and more trucks and "What's your 10-40/" or whatever they scream at each other over those CB radios while they are looking for Smokey.

Well, they could read Bill Mack's book and get some ideas. Bill had a way with the trucker audience for a very long time. Me, I wouldn't know where to start, but I've wondered here and there if the subject matter gets a little heavy for those cruising the highways. But these days, many of those cross-country haulers have put in satellite radio units instead...giving the 42-state coverage of WBAP some competition. And WBAP's not helping things by running spots for XM and Sirius during the overnight hours!

The show was far better with Bill Mack at the helm. Yes they should read his book, a definite good read. The show sells, but then again anything seems to sell on radio anymore.

I gained huge respect for WBAP over the years for their fantastic signal into Chicago and the wonderful deep-track 45's that Bill Mack aired
on his overnight show. When I started working on the road, one night when I was working in Dallas, I went in and met the man.
He was most gracious.
While he was "in charge" he had the freedom to decide which songs to play as one of the last "free DJs".

And this is why we recall this tenure with appreciation.

He could still surprise us with something that didn't test well, and we'd still love hearing it.

And by developing such a listener base, in the same way WSM has a huge "heritage" base, a station enjoys great momentum.
Toying with such a well-developed, fine-tuned identity will result in shudders and shakes.

Welcome to corporate assemblylie radio. Those who receive the checks, don't care about the quality as long as they receive the checks.

Do you blame them though 'Plex? I mean nobody likes to be unemployed. :'(

If I'm not mistaken....it was my understanding that near the end of his tenure on the trucking show.....Bill usually only worked one.....maybe two days a week live. Is there a chapter in his book titled "phoning it in?"

Bill taped his show on large reels . Friday'sat mornings/sunday mornings were live with the co-host or weekend pt guy. His last week was done live twice including the fianl show. He got fed up,when they became a network, and they literally over sold it He actually had about 20 min per hour of his show. The rest was spots, news, weather. He admitted "its not my show anymore"

So Kplex....what you are saying is....when it's "not your show anymore"...it's ok to be the true professional and just mail it in?????? That doesn't sound like the proper way to leave a legacy does it????

I was raised to work the full shift for as long as you are employed....whether you like the way things are being done or not.....but then....maybe I'm just not "old school" enough. I'm just a guy who believes you are judged by the work you do. :'(

I didn't say i agree with what he did,but you couldn't blame him. That was his show from 1969. He and the news dept. under Joe Halstead mad WBAP the power house it became. Then you get these "yuppies" from the 8o's wit h their bidness degree, seeking to change things so the quality goes down but th price goes up. Bill was smart. he recorded the show from his home studio, timed out, Eric ran it. Bill hated the network and its changes and the over saturation of spots. The last two years of the show it was painful to listen to ,he was simply not enjoying it and it showed. Now hes on XM and feeling much better, They added equipment in his home studio so his "commute to work" is only a few feet.

So what YOU'RE saying...is that if you are an employee (in ANY
business - not just media) and you are unhappy, feel that management
doesn't support you, doesn't promote, recognize, and compensate
you for your experience and job well done, that you should just grin and
bear it, and stay in that cesspool of unhappiness????!!!.

BS! That's ridiculous.

Whether you are happy with a job, feel you are accepted and
acknowledged by management and your peers, is what drives
good performance, and good work ethic. Unhappiness tanks
everything, and spreads like a disease in the working world.

I think he's saying that if you're drawing a paycheck you owe it to the employer to earn that paycheck and not mail it in. If the work environment doesn't foster your creativity and motivate you should get out and find an employer who accomplishes that for you.

I know that if somebody was mailing it in for me I'd want them to get out regardless of how much they like the work environment. If I was writing the check to the employee I'd expect nothing less than full effort even if they disagree. Otherwise there's the door.

Bill like Ron had a passion for radio, something that is lost for many post 1996. Bill like Ron negotiated his contract and WBAP/ABC ALLLOWED him to record his program at home for a few years. So it wasn't Bill saying" in your face". Bill like Ron cared about the quality of the show, not like the suits who believed you programmed around sales. Howard Garret was another one. He left because his show only came out to about 18 minutes per hour due to the amount of sales His and the stations, and thus quality was lost.

The art of radio vs. the biz of radio. They have to find a happy medium...some say your job is to not screw up getting a listener from the 7:20 spotset to the 7:35 spotset, and have fun doing it. I say if WBAP stays in the top 5 in their demo on AM in 2007 thats a great thing. Getting a boss to try your ideas on that type of station seems difficult at best. However, more Hal from 5-8a and less bullcrap would be a great start.

KPLEX - I'm confused....how do YOU know why the Dirt Doctor left WBAP? Do you work there? Did Howard clue you into the inner workings of his show?

I just want to get a better understanding of who/what you know in radio in town....so I can better gauge the level of knowledge and insight you might have regarding the issues we are discussing
