When WINZ Flips back to Sports... the AM options are?

And who would really care if CC does this??? WINZ-AM has been in the ratings basement since it was sold to CC and its news-talk format flipped. CC will never invest in 940 since it would cannabalize 610's ratings.

610 barely has any ratings.

Your joking, right? 610 WIOD is, by far, the highest rated (English Speaking) AM in the market.

That's what I thought also.

According to yesterdays Sports Section of the Sun-Sentinel it was to be happening tonight at 6 which was about 35 minutes ago. I haven't tuned in because i'm not that interested in another sports station. CC blew it once with WRFX and could suffer again.

The Heat are on now when the game & post game are over we get J.T. The Brick then I assume Fox weekend programing until Monday Morning.

Really? DID they blow it? Their mission as they explained to clients at the time was to knock off a half a share from WQAM, and help boost WIOD into the English speaking news/talk lead. It worked. Before, QAM was killing everybody. It was positioning itself as the leading spoken word station in the market. After, WIOD enjoyed a nice lead over WQAM. Rush was beating Neil. RFX - they must have made some impact with you because you remembered the calls - never got more than a share...probably less...but when they came on QAM was off a half a share at least from that point on. Since then, WIOD has had its share of ratings issues, and a handful of times QAM - actually just Neil - beat WIOD. But that's been the exception. Some could pinpoint the start of WIOD problems with the rebirth of WINZ as a progressive talk. WIOD will gain...maybe just a tenth or two...but these days and in this market, that's huge. Meanwhile, even with tiny numbers, I'll bet WINZ will bill more than it has since..it was sports. Plus it'll be a much easier combo with WIOD or BIG. I don't see how they'll suffer one bit. I'd say they blew it when they switched to progressive talk. And this rights (no pun) that wrong.

You are right about WIOD. Without a progressive station their numbers will be a bit better. The difference between back then with WRFX & now is that there are several sports stations in the market as opposed to one. The dollars aren't there. It will be simply added value for WBGG or WIOD. A throw in of sorts if you will. Especially, when you consider that CC has bundled their sales people in teams that sell a block of stations. In this case it would be the m-25-54 stations.

Good points. If that's the case, then it's going to be tough for QAM and especially rough on WAXY. Both have big payrolls (and big rights fees) and they really don't have sister stations to easily combo up with. Since WINZ's costs are minimal I'd say their decision was an easy and smart one.

To answer your question...

I'd say WQAM's payroll is about 1.5 million per year on their talent. WAXY is close but under a million per year.

Here's where you're only partially right. WQAM pays big on rights fees of the Dolphins & Canes Sports (I would estimate about 4 million for both). WAXY's deals with the Panthers & Marlins are time buys. So, they dish out zero and make money from each for their respective seasons.

WQAM's sales staff is as good as any in the market. If not the best. WAXY's pails in comparison, but has been restructured and is functional under LF.

WINZ's costs may be minimal, but in a market like this you get what you pay for. Which means WINZ has little risk, but will reap little reward.

In this economy, where CC sales people are being capped on how much they can receive in commissions payments... I guess that's good.

Yes, you read that correctly.

CC is as close to filing for Chapter 11 as any radio company in America. No one is reporting that, but the fact that they are capping monthly commissions on sales people screams money issues & restructuring issues.

WINZ is flipping solely b/c it's an easier sell for sales people as a throw in (added value). It will not succeed in any way, shape or form. Not from a sales standpoint and certainly, not from a ratings perspective. But, it won't bleed and it has a slightly higher chance of making a few more dollars than Air America.

And those are the facts.

It's almost fascinating how more and more programming moves are becoming cost-ineffective. With Clear Channel private and owned by a group of equity firms, basically it means they have to make the money back by any means necessary.

With the sudden Fox Sports push (Which seems like a real knee-jerk reaction, really. What's with these Fox Sports flips lately? NOW they want to push it? After they fired 3 1/2 shows and removed live content from overnights? Where's the logic?), CC probably looked at WINZ and saw those Dial Global, Nova M, and AAR shows, and the 5 minutes an hour of network spots on a big AM signal in the #12 market, and said "That station could be playing ads from one of OUR networks!" and so Fox Sports is plugged in. CC national ads on a CC station.

A page on the new “Sports Animal” page at http://www.am940southflorida.com (a site plugged constantly tonight by Fox Sports
Radio’s JT The Brick) says, when you click it that prog. radio on WINZ is over:
“WINZ has not made money since it was progressive”. They go on to say that while the audience is loyal it’s
not as big as other stations (even if ratings were halfway decent, billing may be a part of it...) It also blames
the economy, “Randi Rhodes losing her syndication” etc
