WHER: 1,000 Beautiful Watts

WHER: 1,000 Beautiful Watts

"When I started WHER…people thought I had rocks in my head. A girl could do a cooking show, but no one thought girls could handle hour-to-hour programs and commercials. I felt differently. I had always wanted a radio station, but Memphis already had nine. I had to do something different. An all-girl crew, and pleasant, light music, was the answer." ~Sam Phillips, Memphis, TN, 1960

I ran across this and thought I would share.

Despite the Memphis history, in my head, WHER will always be a beautiful music station in Hattiesburg, MS.

It's interesting, too. Since dumping the beautiful music very late in the game, the 100 kW signal has never really found its footing, despite being the only Class C0 licensed to Hattiesburg. But, I digress...

DE: I have done quite a bit of work for Mr. Furr (Elder), and apparently they were doing right well with their WHER...it sounded really GOOD, too! JBI
