Where are the Creative Radio Minds

In radio it is up to the great minds on the air to PAINT the PICTURE. More creative, more interesting and definitely more entertaining than TV.. Radio was here FIRST... but, we have gone fifty or sixty years since the great days of radio dramas, and live shows...and the genius' who run our business have instead become greedy and lazy... The Cumulus good ole boys network from Atlanta wouldn't know talent if it hit them right in the face. No creativity what- so- ever. It's all safe. It's bland to say the least. Where are the creative minds in our business? The HD channels can be used for some serious creativity... but are they? No... let's do our throw away blues format here instead... or deep tracks...or the doowap 50's format.. why not something so interesting that the public HAS to go purchase an HD radio... like in 1981 when when all HAD to have cable to watch MTV. If anyone wants to put something like this together to present to the industry at NAB or R&R conventions... I'm in.

Your Radio Drama Queen,
Crystal McKenzie

The creative minds found better/more highly paid jobs in tv, advertising, public relations, internet and the like.

Radio pay and radio management stifle keeping good creative help.

Correct, radio management doesn't want good creative help. It's about task completion for as cheap as they can get it. Today's radio is designed for minimal risk.

Creativity died and was buried along with all the good things radio used to be, but everything comes back around...give it 20 years or so. Long enough for the idiots running things now also die and are buried.

Crystal,
I have a theory about your question. I had a great conversation with a GM locally about this subject a few years ago. His theory is this: In the first wave of lay-offs, the first ones to go are multi-taskers who have not found their "niche" just yet. it doesn't mean they're not great broadcasters, it just means that they're easy targets "on paper." In the second wave of lay-offs, the "specialists" get let go. These are often creative people...but they don't multi-task very well. Unfortunately for the business, many creative ideas come from this group. The people who are left are then required to perform the functions formerly done by the first two groups and are simply too tired to be creative. We love you Crystal! D

Pretty simple. Creative minds in radio got out of radio because they weren't being allowed to be creative anymore.
