Re: Here's some other name's I'd be curious to know about

Sad to report that Lee Andrews passed away of a heart attack
in November 2000. Lee and I worked together in the late 70's
at 108 FM (then WDMT)when it was an AC format with a sprinkling
of appropriate oldies, kind of what WGAR was doing on AM at the
time. We also ran the Chardon daytimer on 1560 (then WCDN)from
1985 to 1987, with Lee as GM, Bob Lewis (Beda) as Station Mgr.
and me as PD/CE. All of us were also on air. Lee was a great
guy to work with. I knew him since the late 60's.
Newsman Ed Richards I've also known almost as long. First met
him at WHOT in Youngstown. We then worked together for 4 years
in the early 80's when I was at 1220 WGAR. After Ed got shafted
in all this corporate "restructuring", he left the business and
now is a Communications/Public Relations person for Medical
Mutual, I believe. I keep in touch with him and he says there's
no way he'd go back to radio now....doesn't want to give up the
Mon-Fri 9 to 5 no nites, holidays, or weekends schedule.

Greetings -
This may be my only ever post here - but just because someone mentioned to me that I was mentioned...

Chuck Meyer is alive and well in Austin Tx - last I heard working for Clear Channel as a PD and newshost (on a sister station).
How in the world did you find out who his producer was?
-someone formerly known as Big Head.

Re: Here's some other name's I'd be curious to know about

WOUB had some great talent, a few years before I arrived The Real Bob James held court on 1340.

From 73-76 here are some of the other charecters that kept 1340 rockin' and 91.3FM twangin!

Carol Ford (don't know where she is now)
Cris Edmonds (now am drive WNIC)
Don Blesse (now sales rep WTAM)
Greg "Boogie" McAurthur (now in Seattle)
Frank Micheal Krauss (Beau Weaver of WQIO Canton fame)
Chuck Freeman (now a minister in Canton)
"Jazzy" Jeff Nidert- now radio station owner
Wynn Richards Roseburg- worked at various Cleveland stations...I have no idea where he is today.
Ted Jankowski-long time voice at the Illinois Farm bureau

Most of us were also involved in the jingle paradoy "There Buddy" which can be heard on Uncle Ricky's site.

Of course when we aproached our Junior and Senior years at Ohio University, many of us "honed" (sp) our craft and got weekend gigs in Parkersburg. Frank, Greg McAurthur,Don and myself were all involved with WXIL during it's early years.

David, You bring back some fond memories. I worked in that newsroom in 1970-1971 and it WAS one hell of a news operation! The Steve Fullerton partying stories are legendary, but he was one of the best on air news people ever. Never forget my first weekend on the air, Steve stopped by to see how I was doing. He walked in drinking a can of Colt 45 and had another cold one in a bag he was carrying. This was at 10am on Saturday morning!

Other WHLO news alumni include Gene Ferguson who was WHLO's investigative reporter and won several national awards for his work. Other who worked there included Ron Allen, Ken Gray and Ed Richards who went over to WCUE in 1973 and later to 1220/WGAR in 1976.

Jerry Vincent was a dear friend and I am happy to see he and Sherry are doing great things with their ministry in Canton.

The cream of the crop! Throw in John O'Day and you have what amounts to a radio news dream team. No wonder l220/WGAR's news department was the most copied in all the nation back in the 70's and 80's. Know what? I have tapes of those guys on WGAR that would put today's WTAM to shame!

Richards(a really good guy who really got screwed by Clear Channel at 99.5 WGAR) now is a big shot in the Corporate Communications Department at Medical Mutual of Ohio. He says its nice having a "real job."

Braun is a TV rep for Raycom Media, last I talked with him he was based in Birmingham, Alabama and loves his job. Says he missed Cleveland, though.

And McBride, for reasons unknown, reportedly got blown out of his gig at a prominent station there. McBride was a high profile news guy in the windy city with his unique and witty writing style.

Don't forget WGAR also has Dorothy McIntyre, who ended up at ABC Radio News, and Jim Chenevey who is at CBS Radio News.

The old GAR was just loaded with news talent to be sure.

Re: Here's some other name's I'd be curious to know about

Didn't Ed Richards go to Detroit for a bit after WGAR?

Ed Richards, Dana Mills

Ed Richards was ND and morning news voice at WOMC-FM, Detroit (Dick Purtan's station) from 1984 to 1992.According to Detroit News and Plain Dealer articles, his newscast beat out WJR and WWJ for first place, best newscast in the Michigan Associated Press competition in 1990. The Detroit News article noted that the WOMC news department consisted of only Richards and a part-timer.The article madea big deal out of the fact that it was a David and Goliath story.

Interestingly Dana Mills ended up taking Richards place at 'OMC. She is the former Dana Hudak from Akron who worked with Richards at 1220/WGAR in the late 70's-early 80's. She ended marrying Paxton Mills, formerly of WIXY, WBBG, and 1220/WGAR. Tragically, Paxton committed suicide a couople of years ago.Dana is still at WOMC.

Joey Harper of 91.3 using Bill Hall's user name to reply to the posting of where I am now! I love reading where so many of us radio geeks have wound up!
Bill's upset that nobody asked where he is now...he of the fabulous fill-in fame for FM talker, WNIR, who now has the largest radio audience in it's history. Well,we're working together for the third time in radio at 91.3 The Summit. He's on the air from 4-8 and not only am I on the sales staff with Jim Chenot, but I have a radio show on Tuesday evenings there at 11pm, called Late Night Jazz with Joey..it's fun, I get to program an hour's worth of jazz from my own library...very fun! Chenot also has a show on Friday nights at 11pm called The Radio Sandbox. It may be public radio, but Scene magazine called 91.3, radio the way FM radio should be! And we're having more fun in radio than we've had in years...knowing the state of radio these days...
Thanks for mentioning me

I found him ! I'm wearing his pants!

> Hmmm, some more names for the pile...

> Kevin Coan (I believe in NC doing news/VO)

If by "NC" you mean North Canton. :) Kevin can be heard as a part-time/fill-in on WNIR news. And since Kaiser Bill's pretty cheap, I'm sure there's no VT capabilities, so Kevin's live (and interacting with the hosts).

***That Kevin Coan guy returned to SC (South Carolina not South Canton) in 2008; PD/Mornings WBHC FM Hampton (almost Hilton Head, SC). Also VO and outsourced commercials, vt's and local news through www.kevincoanmedia.com
