That's right. I worked with Mike again for a short time right before I left Clear Channel. I believe Mike also does some work with WHP-AM.

It occurred to me that I could answer some of this myself.Larry K. Scott (who did PM Drive at WCMB in the late '70s) spent some 25-years at WARM 103 before the recent sale shifted him over to WSOX. Jim Allen (who was PD, morning man and co-host of "Live from Strawberry Square") left radio around 1980 and moved to Texas, but is now back in the biz; I think he's working somewhere in Virginia. I neglected to mention a couple of others: Jeff Hunt (who did noon-3 following Paul Harvey) - I'm not sure where he is these days, but he was a great friend. Dave Dillon (who was interim PD after RJ Harris left for Starview); not sure where he is either, but Dave was the first PD that I worked for. Under Dave, I was a gopher whose most important job was sorting 45s and getting sandwiches for the jocks down at the Handymarket.

That was the first 'job' Interim PD Dave Dillon assigned to me. He told me to go into the record closet (which was jam-packed with records) and alphabetize the records. I don't remember how long it took me, but I do remember what seemed like dozens of copies Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life." Yikes.

Jack worked as a sub for Tara Mead during her maternity leave very recently here at RadioPA. He's still an "on-call sub" for us, and still looking for a full-time, permanent job. He also, as you might have noticed, pops in on this forum from time to time.

MYTH-BUSTED!! -- The fella who does Boscov's is NOT Ralph Lockwood, although he does sound quite similar. That man is a friend of Al Boscov and has been doing those in-store announcements for him over 40 years.

Thanks for bringing this out in the open. It's been almost like a hobby over the years telling one person after another that Ralph Lockwood is NOT the Boscov's PA announcer. But now that the subject has been brought up, does anyone know why the kinda sorta Lockwood sound alike recordings over the Boscov's PA ALWAYS sound draggy and distorted like the recordings are on their last legs?

I can answer some of the questions about the Boscov's in-store ads, and disprove some of the other comments. I personally was next in line to be "the voice" of the Boscov in store ads in May of 1994. I do not know the name of the person prior to that, but they were giving it up after doing it for 5-6 years. I think his first name was Chris. The man who supplies all audio and equipment for every Boscov store, Ned Leiby, is a personal friend of mine who had me in line to take over that job. He too is a friend of "Mr. B". Anyway, right before meeting Mr. Boscov to put the finishing touches on our deal, which was for $200 a week cash to supply ads for the then 43 Boscov's stores. Ned had just installed new cart machines (and I believe they still use them) for the stores. I was to travel to Mt.Penn every Monday to record the ads, dub them to cart, and send them to the stores. Al's longtime friend Bob Smith got wind of the job being available, and asked Al if he could have it. Bob had just retired and was looking for something to do and some extra cash. I had heard that Bob was a longtime personality in the Reading area on both TV & radio. That recognition and his friendship with AL was too much for me to overcome. He got the job and has been doing it ever since. Bob has had some health issues the last several years, and Ned often tells me I'm next in line should the position open up again but I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, Bob Smith is the current voice on the Boscov's in store ads, he's been doing it since May 1994, and the reason the audio may sound crappy is that he's using a makeshift "studio" in the Mt Penn store and using cart machines & carts that are probably 13 years old.

gwjr67...thanks for the info! I never realized that Bob Smith is the Boscov's voice. When he worked at WEEU in Reading I believe he used to be referred to as Robert E. "Bob" Smith. The funny thing is that when Channel 51 (WDVE) in Reading went on the air in the late 70's Bob Smith was hired as the news director based on his extensive news background at EEU. However, from that day foreward, Bob Smith became Robert Smith. He was great on the radio, but looked mediocre on TV, plus his radio "sound" came across on TV. The result? Got got it. His long time radio demeaner never translated into being a TV news anchor. One night, as he opened the newscast (called the Ten O'clock News) the first thing out of his mouth was "It's ten o'clock." By the way, that was not the standard way that he opened the news each night to tie in with the name of the newscast. But that's the way he did it that night: a friggin' time check? He never got it that what he did on radio didn't translate to TV. Shortly after I got out of college - with a Broadcast Journalism degree from Penn State - Bob/Robert interviewed me for a reporter job before the station went on the air. He proved to me in the interview that he knew very little about TV news. I didn't get the job because he said he wanted the news team to "hit the ground running." They also hired Frank Mooney, another long time Reading radio vet, to do the weather. It was a train wreak: Bob/Robert doing news with that weight of the world radio news droan and Frank doing weather sounding just like he did on the radio: dry, straight forward and lacking any personality. Usually the weather person is the one who injects a little humor, like Chuck Rhoads at Channel 27. No wonder the news effort on Channel 51 fizzled out after a relatively short time.

Whatever happened to the staff of one of the greatest radio stations ever in Central PA..the staff of WWKL, Kool 94.9. I remember Dave Saint, Scott Allen, Tim McCaw, Scooter Shannon, and who could ever forget Todd and Nancy. I believe that station either won or was nominated for a Marconi Award. That station took the market by storm and came real close to defating the mighty WINK 104,which at the time was the market leader.

I was just getting into radio when that station was on the air. I now work in New England radio sales.

In the mid-90s, we bought MIX 99.3 and 1460-WCMB...then the company flipped us over to 99.3...and started up an AC on 94.9 (Magic 94.9)...that lasted a year...and then came BOB 94.9 (country). KOOL 99.3 went on until the summer of 2001 when Clear Channel ended it by flipping format to a CHR; by then, RJ was already doing talk on WHP 590, Chris Andree moved on to head up production for Clear Channel Harrisburg, and I moved down the dial to help start up a new oldies station that only lasted a couple of years. Tod Jeffers is very happy these days, doing talk at a station in West Virginia; he and Nancy Ryan had left KOOL in the mid '90s to work for our ex-boss, Dana Harmon in Columbus...but they returned a couple of years later to do mornings on BOB. I'm probably forgetting some details, but that's most of it.

I am going to guess before. Kevin did nights back in 1982 when Slim Jim Buchanan was doing afternoons and Dan Steele was doing mornings with the Captain. Kasey Summers did overnights and Brad Flick did middays.
