So, while we were gone, Rodney Ho did an interview with the 2 Live Stews in which they admitted that they are starting to look outside of the Atlanta-area to restart their show. I know that Rodney occasionally posts on here and thought maybe we who are from different parts of the country could post about what the sports radio scene in our neck of the woods is like and Rodney could pass that info on to the Stews’ agent, Norm Schrutt, as he tries to secure a deal for the brothers. I’ll go first:
Tampa, Florida- main teams are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (football), Tampa Bay Rays (baseball), and Tampa Bay Lightning (hockey). The closest basketball team is the Orlando Magic, and interest among Tampa residents and sports call-in listeners about the NBA is next to nil.
Highest-rated sports show in the market: Steve “The Big Dog” Duemig, a white man in his early 60s who is openly homophobic, has referred to Barack Obama as “the most corrupt President in American history” and refuses to talk about the NBA “because they blast that Hip Hop crap during intermission.” He gets monster ratings.
The most admired black sports figures in the market are Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, Derrick Brooks, and Ronde Barber, conservative Christians who would likely frown upon the Stews whooping and screaming and Doug’s criticism of “Michael Vick Haters.”
If anything, Dungy would probably condemn Doug and turn the entire town against the Stews.
If the Stews were to go “live and local” in Tampa:
They would have to familiarize themselves with the history of the Bucs, Rays, and Lightning. They would have to devote a considerable portion of their show to hockey talk, Tampa Bay is the sole “New South” hockey market where the city has passionately embraced their team
They would also have to devote considerable time to the Rays. Team manager Joe Maddon is very, very, very laid back and doesn’t believe in confrontation or badmouthing people and has a strict “accentuate the positive” view of the world. This philosophy extends to the team as a whole and players (especially Evan Longoria and David Price) can get annoyed with reporters and hosts who try to “get themselves over” at the expense of the team.
Odds of success in Tampa for the Stews: Poor.
