Now that WJJZ -Jazz Format is history, where do I go now for jazz? Any suggestions? Help!
Your best bet is WRTI (Temple University Public Radio) and its relays and translators. They play real jazz (not the jazzy elevator music that WJJZ played) from 6 PM to 6 AM Monday through Friday, midnight (Friday into Saturday) until 6 AM and 6 to 8 PM on Saturday, and all day Sunday except 3 to 6 PM. Saturdays from 8 PM to midnight, WRTI airs a bilingual program ("El Viaje") featuring Latin/Afro-Cuban jazz, salsa, and traditional Cuban and Puerto Rican rhythms. At other times, they play classical music, using some of the former WFLN staff. Here are the frequencies:
Philadelphia: WRTI, 90.1
Mount Pocono: WRTY, 91.1
Ephrata: WRTL, 90.7
Harrisburg: WJAZ, 91.7
Ocean City, NJ: WRTQ, 91.3
Dover, DE: WRTX, 91.7
WRTI also operates translators (low power repeater stations) in the following cities:
Allentown: 97.1
Reading: 97.7
Pottsville: 99.1
Scranton: 106.1
Wilkes-Barre: 94.9
Yes, up here in Northeast PA, we can still hear jazz on 106.1! WVIA-FM in Scranton (89.9) and its relay, WVYA in Williamsport (89.7) play jazz from 7 to 8 PM Monday-Friday, with some jazz programming in the wee hours of Saturday morning and on Saturday night. Other public stations may include jazz programs.
If you can receive any of the stations from the New York area, you can hear real jazz full-time on WBGO, 88.3 in Newark, NJ or "smooth jazz" on WQCD, 101.9 in New York. The stations of the New Jersey Network simulcast WBGO from midnight to 6 AM, so you can hear jazz there as well in the wee hours. The NJN stations are:
WNJT-FM, Trenton, 88.1
WNJS-FM, Berlin, 88.1
WNJM-FM, Manahawkin, 89.9
WNJB-FM, Bridgeton, 89.3
WNJN-FM, Atlantic City, 89.7
WNJZ, Cape May, 90.3
WNJP, Sussex, 88.5
