Where do you Turn in an Emergency?

KevinFodor said:
A real "Newstalk" station has to protect its' image. News is a big part of that equation. Even if you're in a smaller market, it should be expected that the PD or News Director would come in and handle emergency coverage. That's what I had to do when I was PD of a small market station. It's sad so few operators care enough.

You perfectly described the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre situation. "Newsradio" was asleep at the switch. The others didn't know about the bad weather or didn't care.

Perhaps if our newsradio program director actually lived within listening distance of the radio station --- that person would have been aware that nothing was being covered. If something happens when the full time people are at the station it gets thouroughly covered, but after hours fugetaboutit. Let's face it we no longer have constitent radio reporting of news, let alone disasters in this area. I remember within the last two years the rivers were rising, it was a Saturday and some of the roads were closed, I switched over to our lone news station and nothing, not a mention, no traffic reports, nothing. However, when Pocono is having a race we get live traffic reports to tell us the obvious, Route 115 and I-80 are slow. There isn't even a single person dedicated as a reporter at our newsradio station. It is a talk station that occasionally covers the news... :'(
