Where does KLLI billing rank? Are they not profitable?

For some unknown reason despite being a full power station 93.9 has never been a successful station being a top 10 biller.

Which is probably why Emmis ended up selling it. But it's a great example where the quality of the signal has nothing to do with the billings. Lots of similar stations in that same situation.

To understand this particular station, one needs to understand the owner. Radio is not his primary or even secondary business. He's not a typical corporate radio owner. He's more like Saul Levine. So he's less likely to play format roulette in search of something that "works."

Just wanted to know if KLLI is making a profit? If not maybe a format change is in order.
Groups do not release station specific P&L statements, so your question has no answer.

But KLLI does not compete in the overall LA market… it competes in the LA Spanish language Hispanic market where it does very well in both 18-34 and 18-44. Since most buys in that market are against 18-49 and not 25-54 they are well positioned to be very profitable.

If you are among the top 20 to 25 stations in the sales demos, you are going to be quite profitable in LA. And then the stations that do not program for ratings such as those in Asian languages Persian, Armenian and others can make a great deal of money within those separate markets, which have their own separate businesses and advertisers.

In a market as large as LA / OC, being a top 10 biller most definitely is NOT a requirement for being able to turn a profit.

Plenty of variables help determine profitability. The revenue line is just one of those variables.

Radio is part of his entertainment division, which includes hotels, casinos, and venues, and is apparently his favorite enterprise, even if it may not be his most profitable one. I know a number of people who used to work with me who are over there now and they say that he is in nearly daily contact with station management, and is on top of every major decision.

He reminds me of Terry Pegula. I know people who work for him, and he's involved a lot in everything, but he owns some things for profit and some things for fun.
