Where has all the news gone?

I was listening to WTVN this evening and noticed they quit running local news after Corby signs off the air. That leaves the hours of 7p-5a void of anything local. It looks like the "Giant" has been kicked off his beanstalk.

Well I guessing CC Columbus MGT think that listenership is down after 7PM. Like WVKO AM stop airing live shows after 8PM. (with the exception of the last two hrs of Jon Elliot.) Anyway the only time I listen to WTVN is 5AM to 6AM for news and their open line during Saturday. To much best of's on WVKO AM during the weekends. I like to listen to the other side. There is WOSU AM/WCBE FM for the weekend as well.

I think it's less of a function of WTVN or even CC for that matter making the call, and more of the fact that radio news in general is getting it's a$$ kicked by the interweb. Same goes for newspapers. Notice how TVN is constantly pimping the website? Honestly, when is the last time you tuned in to radio for the "top of the hour" news? And when you do catch it, do you feel like you're up to date and informed? I can go to 3 news websites and know more than the WTVN newsroom does. And I can have that info on my cell phone in seconds.

Stations like WTVN are on the short endangered list, their audiences are continuing to age while the new crop of potential listeners are getting their news and info from blogs. Sad but true.

Columbus in December 1985...

Commercial radio stations 20?
Local TV stations: 4? (no WTTE yet)
Cable TV stations: 31 on QUBE
satellite radios: 0
Daily Newspapers: 2
Internet users: 20 at Battelle.
MP3 players: 0
Cellphones: a handful for the rich

Jump to current times when when we have 34 Commercial radio stations, and unlimited media choices.

Radio as we knew it is dead.
Network feeds are increasing and local talent is going to continue fading away.

Another problem is that the newsroom at least at TVN is run with a skeleton crew. It's tough to get out and get stories when there is no one around.

This is ture I can access national/world news on my t-mobile cell phone via their "t-zones" feature. For local news it can't replace it.

Not to mention the diminished appetite for "real" news. Most people are burned out from
campaign 08 coverage, Iraq/Iran, and stories about the economy. They'll say "who cares about Iran, it doesn't
affect me." Day to day no it doesn't, but long term it absolutely does. But when you mention Britney Spears' little sister is pregnant - and their ears perk up, you have to wonder how that affects them. It doesn't, but they're entertained by stories like that. What the news media needs to do is get better at explaining why they should care about certain stories and present it in such a way that "Joe Sixpack" can relate to what the news means to them and their existence.

If Cronkite were dead he'd be spinning in his grave!

They run local news at the bottom of the hour, don't they? ???

WTVN seems to have dropped all local news reports after 7:00 PM and before 5:00 AM.

The CC budget ax has not hit its all News-Talk station in Cleveland and Cincinnati
quite as hard. At least they still have local news reports 24/7 on the weekdays.

Question, Dose this mean WTVN dose not staff it news room from 7:00 PM and before 5:00 AM??
If there is major news that needs to get on the air ASP during this time, what will happen??
For, example, Severe weather with little or no warning.

On a positive note, WTVN is staffing with live talk show host(s) instead of Syndicated programming fare
during periods of severe weather. I have head the WTVN PD on the air with live programming during
severe weather periods instead of Syndicated programming. So, at least, they are prepared to go live
during severe weather but what will happen if there is little warning?

If August 25, 2007, was any indication...when Franklin County was under a tornado warning...it took roughly 20 minutes for WTVN to hook up with 10TV for simulcasting weather information.

A couple years ago, after that awful ice storm that downed powerlines,  I remember being ticked at WTVN for steadfastly sticking to their continuous Christmas music...while many thousands were without power and looking for shelter.  I don't think TVN was even doing hourly local newscasts, at least not during the afternoon.  I lost a lot of respect for that station that day.

This demolition derby castrated WHAS/Louisville's legendary news commitment a couple year ago. Will someone be available in case a big story breaks? 4PM on a Sunday afternoon about a year ago, I was stuck in a 7 mile traffic backup on I-65...It was a waste of time listening to WHAS at the top of the hour. Fox News followed by 2 minutes of Kentucky News Network reporting such crucial stories as cattle were loose in SE KY followed by a canned weather forecast from the local TV partner. What caused the 7 mile backup was a 4 car carnage where people died. It was the lead story on the TV news that evening. But to WHAS, it wasn't even mentioned when it was actually "news". I hate to tell you this, but WTVN sounds like it's being dismantled in the same manner. While I'm a Christian & choose to pray for those who are making these irresponsible decisions, I can understand how others would wish that they rot...which they may be doing quite well on their own.

My favorite news promo of all time was heard on WTVN some years ago..."if the world ends today, count on Newsradio 610 WTVN for in depth team coverage".

Well if the world Ended today i guess with WTVN cutting back on its news Department they would have to rely on WTAM and WLW For In Depth Team coverage LOL

Maybe it means they had inside knowledge of the world ending, so they knew they wouldn't need all that staff from here on out. ;)

I don't know about Dirk but i know Carla has that phobia going on. She got in trouble with some Muslims a while back for doing something similar. It's entertainment for their listeners though and you can tell by what the listeners say about stuff. They agree overall with that notion and like to talk about it.

Well Dirk is the "sane" one of the two weekend host. Notice the quotes. Why Carla is there just for filler. most people are doing other stuff than listen to AM radio on Sunday nights.
