Where has Personality on the Air Gone?

I don't know if its just me, but where in the hell as radio personality gone? Growing up, it was always the DJs that made me listen and call radio stations. Now, its as if everyone on air is tied down to the chair and not allowed to have a "personality" on the radio. While I do enjoy the music on most stations, a lilttle personality doesn't hurt either. Would any of the "Big Boys" in radio be where they are if they were tied down to liner cards and time limits???? I think you know the answer!!!

For the most part, radio now is nothing more than a corporate mule train. The DJs are the mules. Used to be talent, now it's just <whip cracking over the DJ's head> READ THE LINES VERBATIM. Ain't that fun radio nowadays? What fond memories for today's listeners.

Request line? What kind of smoke screen is that nowadays?

Live DJs that you can call up and get to know? Try the computer's number.

Face it, gang, good radio is dead. What's left is your choice of the least bad of the bad.

But hit the corporations where it hurts...buy an Ipod. Or support internet radio, which will likely be the destruction of these arrogant millionaires. As well it should be. Why continue to torture yourself listening to radio when you know it's not going to get better, and in fact, will only get worse.

There's a special deep place in hell for the radio corporations that have been allowed to take over our beloved business in the last 10 years!

A special pit of molten lava for Andy.

Clear Channel says it's too expensive? Let them get the hell out of the business!

Well, for personality you can listen to Robert Mitchell wow'ing them on WWL at night.

Bob - You sound like you were God's gift to radio, and, maybe back in the day you were but, you're a generation or two removed from radio. Music radio dj's are no more "air personalities" than you are a "quality publisher".

Music radio isn't bad because they don't have "air personalities". And, when old "air personalities" like your friend Captain Humble try to do talk radio, it's disaster.

What limited personality there is on radio is on talk radio. And not WWL either. And not much in this city either. But I know more about even a bad talk show host and their personality than any local djs. And most local radio management doesn't know what to do with a "personality". There's no coaching, no talent development. Management is in the budget crunching business. PDs are either non-existant or computer programmers.

WWL is automated talk. Plug in any host and the show's the same.

99.5 is clueless. The only local host on 99.5 with any credibility is Andre.

690 is in it's own world. If it weren't for syndiated talk no one would listen to 690. Kaare Johnson is a waste of breath and management there think's he's God's gift. Whether you like him or not, Mancow is, at the least, a personality. Savage too.

If an air talent (music or talk) entertains and informs, he'll always have a job. If he can't, he'll either push buttons or sell insurance.

This isn't the 70s anymore.

Don't you have to be "live" to have a personality? Isn't everything on radio voice tracked and recorded ahead of time? Sure seems that way...

caremntor.......sounds like youre a corporate follower. while few corporatios are good most are the result of todays radio. pissant poor quality
i agree with you about the fact that there is no talent coaching or development. in my opinion, i think this is one reason for today's radio. they "cant afford" to take the time during a new jocks first few shifts to show them how to get started and grow.

bob walker, captain humble, cajun ken cooper etc. might have had their prime in radio and it may have passed. but overall the radio we enjoyed yesterday was the work of these guys. they deserve credit for helping to make new orleans radio shine.

brian "sawtooth" mcmullen

Don't know how you could get the idea that I'm "corporate"? I slammed CC and Entercom.

From what I've read on the board, obviously there was some talent in New Orleans radio. And, I wasn't slamming Bob. I've been here for 10 years and never heard him on the air and only know him from his bridal guide.

Every market had some radio personality or personalities. I would have loved to hear some of New Orleans' characters. Unfortunately, the only one I did hear was Captain Humble's poor attempt at talk radio on WGSO.

Two major problems affecting the quality of radio today and the lack of air personalities: consultants and the lack of quality PDs.

The bottom line is that for most stations, AM and PM Drive are their lead personalities. There is no quality, local AM or PM Drive personality in this market. 690 is syndicated in both dayparts. WWL runs Buffoon Bob and Monica (although I can't think of many things funnier than listening to Bob D try to interview Drew Brees and talk sports) and Sports in the Afternoon. 99.5 has the insipid Rob and Bo and the repugnent Garey and Anthony in the Afternoon (none of these four could get a job anywhere - how they continue on the air is beyond me). I couldn't name a local AM or PM Drive personality on any of the music stations, and I've tried to listen to every one.

Garland's not on during the drive time and neither is Andre, but they are personalities, if for nothing else than their longevity in the market. You know them. They have some credibility.

The era of personality radio has passed as has the power of radio.

I think that if radio wants to seperate itself from other mediums, personality radio MUST return. When someone tunes in to a radio station, they expect to hear their favorite song and some form of entertainment. If anyone wants ALL music, they resort to Sirius or CDs. Its safe to say that without personality on the radio, the industry is doomed!! Too bad corporate radio may kill the industry and the "Mom & Pop" stations be the one to one day save it. Look at KBON's recent success!!!

I agree that Radio needs to Entertain and Inform. I just don't see that happening on Music Radio.

If you listen to KBON, you know their air talent is incredibly boring. People listen for the music and KBON is an exception just like KPIG in California. Also, KBON hasn't been effective in converting it's ratings into dollars. Not yet anyway.
