Where have all the great jingles gone? Long time passing. Where have all lyrics gone? Long time ago. Imagination on the air, killed by shotguns everywhere. Remember when radio was fun?
Great sentiment.... although you should give JAM Productions a credit... the only thing you didn't lift from their song was the last two lines... "When will the fad be done? Radio can be fun." That, by the way, was written in the early 80's. Seems as if great jingles (other than the WABC retro stuff) died with CBS-FM. Both they and Z-100 had great jingles through the 90's. Radio tends to be cyclical and when some of these operators realize that radio is Show Business.... not about ten in a row... you may see a swing back to more "traditional" elements.
Cyclical...or not...with today's "everybody has a computer" technology, voiced sweepers (especially ones done in-house) are cheaper and more easily changed/updated! Sad...but true!
True. But gimme a good shotgun jingle any day: 99X! or some good "fast to slow" or "slow to fast" sweeper jingles. There are stations that still use jingles quite effectively. In Buffalo, WHTT has a pretty catchy jingle package integrated with voice bumpers and live, local jocks on the weekend and weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The station has been transitioning from Oldies to Classic Hits for the last few years and seems to have done a good job holding on to the upper (50+) demos while attracting some younger (35-49) listeners.
But when EVERYONE sounds the same, whether it be sweepers, shotguns, whatever, eventually someone (often based out of desparation) goes in a different direction. We can only hope.
