Where is NBC 10 NEWS? I don't see it!

According to a post yesterday WJAR was supposed to start rebranding their newscasts today. But I tuned in and absolutely nothing has changed! What's up with that?

They didnt change their graphics, but the lower thirds and the anchors and reporters signed off as nbc 10 news.

That's IT???? You've got to be kidding me. They are still calling it Newschannel 10 and everything. Same graphics, same music, Same News Set. What the hell kind of rebranding is that? I've got to believe there is more to come.

I'm not done with these guys yet. What the hell kind of crap was that at Noon. NBC10 led the Newscast off with the Stave Leffey show saga. The Mayor who is having trouble with the elections board allowing him to have his own radio show. That was the Top Story??? WHAT??? Then after that Meteorologist John Giorse is standing there telling people how transit buses are free because it's an Ozone alert day. They must have been about 5 minutes into the Newscast before they even talked about an actual News event that mattered.

I saw that WPRI led off with the Murder in Central Falls. At least that was a REAL story. I had a hell of a lot more respect for the product I saw on Channel 12 today than I did for the crap I saw on 10.

John: I am pleasantly shocked to see that you actually complimented WPRI's newscast at Noon today. It's so unlike you to pay the station a compliment! Even though I had nothing to do with the noon newscast, I appreciate the kudos!

As far as the alleged rebranding of WJAR's news: perhaps they are gradually working in the new "NBC 10 News" name within the newscasts...instead of doing it all at once. That's just a guess. Just as "tvland" mentioned, the reporters do their "sig-outs" as NBC 10 News and the "lower third chyrons" say NBC 10 News. Perhaps within the next few days, they will introduce the newscasts as NBC 10 News.

I have tried telling you I don't target any particular station just for the hell of it. Whenever a station does something I like or dislike I'll often bring it up. Today WPRI did good. So they got Kudos! But WJAR didn't do well. I was disappointed that the full rebranding didn't take place and I thought their Noon Newscast was an embarrasment. WLNE had better coverage!

This whole rebranding thing has got me thinking though. When a station changes the News set, how is it usually done? The logistics sound tricky. Seems to me there is only about a 5 hour time frame between newscasts where they can move everything in. Sounds difficult.

Um, broadcast from their newsroom or an auxilliary studio? That's what WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford did the last time they changed their set around.

Same for WCAU in Philadelphia, the NBC 10 WJAR is being modeled after.

In WCAU's case, they were on a temporary set for close to a month, with their old news desk in front of a black background. When the old background was taken down from the old set, they hung it up over the black on the temporary set.

NBC in New York had used a room with a Keywall (The "green screen") back when the current Nightly News set was being built.

Basically during the time, the background was a videotape of a news-set.
During the time, you'd never see camera zooms "on set" or anything to give it away.

Last I was down in New York (a few months back), NBC flagship WNBC-4 was still using "Newschannel 4" as the title of their newscasts.

It's entirely possible that the newscasts may still be titled "Newschannel 10", but with reporters ending their stories by saying (as an example) "Live from Providence, I'm Joe Doakes, NBC-10 News".

After all, ABC's evening newscast is titled "World News Tonight", although correspondents end their stories with a tagline like "From Washington, John Doe, ABC News".
