Where is WZQK 970?

WZQK in Brandon has been off the air for a couple of weeks. It has had serious audio problems for several months. Starting with badly distored sound, then for a while with very low audio in the daytime and much louder audio on the flea power nightime pattern. Several weeks ago they began running a lot of dead air, especially nights and weekends and sometimes running low power in the daytime and going off at night or with a dead carrier. The station has been sporadic lately so I assumed they must be working on it. But for the last few weeks I haven't heard a peep from it. Anyone know whats going on? I"m not sure many people are listening to it because the audio is so bad its barely worth the effort. It never sounded that great even when Roy Harris had the station but lately its been almost unlistenable. The WQST simulcast seems to be normal. it won't win any audio excellence awards but at least you can understand what people are saying.

WZQK is moving to a new transmitter site. If you go by the old site on Hwy 471, you'll see that the towers have been taken down. Not sure when it will be back on the air - give it a few more weeks.

What wrong with the present location. Its been there forever. Where are they moving it too and what will the effect be on the coverage area? There are houses going up left and right along highway 471 and lots of traffic so it looks like they could find an audience if they tried harder.

Not exactly sure where they are moving. It won't be too far from the current site though. They are having to move because Jackson Radio, LLC (the company that acquired the station from June Harris) doesn't own the property on Hwy 471 - just the equipment. You'll see the property sold in the near future for a new subdivision or office complex. That property is probably worth a hundred times what it originally sold for when Bill Martin (the original owner of WRKN) built the station in the late 60s.

thanks for the info. I checked the radio-locator site and it didn't mention any construction permit which they ususally do when a station is moved. I guess if someone wants the property bad enough they can move anything, like they did when they put a Target on WSLI's site. It would be nice if they could get a little more signal toward Jackson but thats probally impossible. If all the new owners got was the the equipment, judging from the terrible audio from 970 lately it sounds like they bought a lemon.
