where the actor isn't acting

If someone is truly a great actor or actress, they can make the emotions seem real even if they come from nothing more then the script. That's their job.

In the episode of M*A*S*H when Henry Blake is killed off, the announcement by Radar that Col. Blake's plane had been shot down was a last minute change to the script and was a complete surprise to the entire cast, except Alan Alda. Apparently, McLean Stevenson had become quite a thorn in the side of the show's producers, as he constantly complained and fought against the poor working conditions at the ranch where the show was filmed. When he decided to leave the show, the producers got one last stab at Stevenson by killing off his character.

Ultimately, I think McLean got the last laugh as supposedly he made a cameo appearance in the opening of the Carol Burnett show later that week. He appeared in a smoking raft yelling, "I'm OK, I'm OK!"

??? Yeah, and he really got revenge the following season for starring in that TV classic - Hello, Larry.

...Hello, Larry wasn't until 1979, four years after leaving M*A*S*H. In between, there were The McLean Stevenson Show and In The Beginning, both single-season stiffs...
