[email protected] Also,, if Pirkle is reading this,,, shoot me another email, tell me how your doing,.. you know I wont mention anything, including your email on this board or anywhere else.

J.J. is a great guy. I haven't heard from him in years, but I worked with him in the early/mid 90's at 99.1 WNOX after he left WOKI and WWZZ. He did evenings for a few months at WNOX and was a class act. I'd also read that he had had health problems, so I hope he's doing well now. It would be great to hear him back on the air again sometime. I know many of us grew up with J.J. doing nights on WOKI throughout the 80's/early 90s.

Last I heard he was working for JTV but I don't know if he's still there or not.

I could care less where he works as long as he is alive and well... He would always take time to talk to the listeners on the phone, both at WOKI, and I even listened to Double 99 cause JJ was there, just cause he was such a good guy. I never met him in person, I regret not doing it when I had the chance.

I did overnights/weekends during the smooth jazz "Double 99" format as "Brian Russell" and I would always see JJ at midnight. He was a great guy and we were lucky to have him there for a few months. If I remember correctly, he started during our country format and left during our smooth jazz format. Too bad he didn't stick around for the urban/rhythmic "X99" format we did from '93 to '97. He'd been great with that format. (although we no longer had the 99.3 signal by that time, only 99.1, so you probably wouldn't have been able to pick it up). Anyway, that was a fun station to work at. I was at 99.1 from 1990, before it moved from Loudon into Knoxville, and I stayed with them through 3 formats till Dick Broadcasting bought the station in 1997 for their news/talk simulcast. That was my last radio job. Hard to believe it's been almost 13 years now.

JJ (Gary) is a great guy. Worked like a dog and always gave 100%. I remember the petition drive he did for the NKOTB back when they were hot. He spearheaded the drive and ended up with thousands of signatures only to have Brother Clay steal his thunder, he groused a little about it but it never affected his work. Anyone else remember "the sunday night dedication party" he hosted on I-100? That was a phenomenal success too. Hundreds of letters each week and tons of phones. I can't believe the guy is not running a station today.

I remember double 99, but I didnt understand the format at that time, so I called it background music for dr.s offices. I could get the 99.3 really well over in Dandridge, which is near Johnson city. Aside from Knoxville stations, I could actually get cleaner reception on Ashevilles 99.9 Kiss Fm before it went country... WOKI signal did great going north, but their signal always suffered multipath mountain hash to the east and south.

Anyone remember when going by sharps ridge on 640, your radio on WOKI and others would suffer from bad front end overload... Wonder why that no longer happens....

I've been reading this board for a long time and have enjoyed all the discussions related to the Knoxville market. I've always just watched "from the sidelines", but I couldn't resist signing up when someone asked about JJ. I was the other half of The Sunday Night Dedication Party from 89 to 91 with JJ and can vouch for what a great guy he was to work with. Yes, he had alot of health problems, but man, he loved what he did, and put everything he had into it. I often wondered what happened to him, but lost touch with him after he came over to Star 93.1 for part-time when I was doing evenings on Oldies 102. It sure would be great to know that he's doing well....
