There is no one "best" site for free music but there are quite a few very good ones. Here are some more.

http://www.archive.org/details/etree

http://www.freemacmusic.com/

http://www.goingware.com/tips/legal-downloads.html

Many artists have live concerts which are free for download:

BTW, these are totally legal. Enjoy.

Re: where to find free/JammerDave is right!

JammerDave is right! Radio Brandy and the stations the students have started only play indie music from artist they have gathered from around the world. Radio Brandy is involved with building the sets for an upcoming movie about an underground radio station with an interesting twist! this time it's a girl who is the pirate. Radio Brandy is also involved with gathering new indie artist who will be apart of the soundtrack. The soundtrack will be made available first to part 15 and undocumented radio stations, BMI and ASCAP and the RIAA will be completely cut out from the project. What goes around comes around!
A brand new record lable will be formed upon the movie's release as well as a radio network for undocumented and part 15 stations, the station willl provide top of the hour news and talk shows exclusively to part 15 stations and pirates around the world.
Music of all types will be made available via CD at low cost to independant broadcasters world wide, one more thing, The DVD's will be made available to part 15, LPFM, and undocumented broadcasters as a fundraiser.
As an added feature, the DVD will provide detailed instructions on how to set up a part 15 radio station, from the studio to the antenna and everything in between.
