Where were you Part 2? (No, it's not Elvis)

August 19th, 1965. The Top-40 wars were well underway with KILT and KNUZ battling it out for the coveted #1 position. The British Invasion makes it to Houston.

Who would be the station to get it here? The BIG 6-10! KILT brings The Beatles to the Sam Houston Coliseum for two performances, one in the afternoon and the other that night. Russ Knight, the Weird Beard was onstage. I was 14 years old, at home, couldn't go, no permission from my parents, plus no money. Even if I had the money, how would I get there?

I sat at home doing what I was usually did, DXing the AM dial, listening and dreaming about being on the radio. A dream that would be realized 7 years later in 1972. At 14, I would have never guessed that I would be on the air at KNUZ and KILT in what was then my radio future.

A year ago, a good friend of mine presented me with a bootleg of both performances of that day. I finally got to hear the Weird Beard and KILT welcoming the Beatles. John Lennon opens with "Howdy y'all" and with a 1-2-3, "Twist and Shout" started the show. I closed my eyes and there they were, the Fab Four in the now gone Sam Houston Coliseum.

Once again Chuck dazzles with another great post. Unfortunatley I dont recall any of that because my dad was in his sophomore year of high school, my mom was 10 years old and that was 15 years before I was born. I bet that was a big event in the history of Houston radio.

We got a copy of that live Beatles recording a few years ago and played it on the air on KLDE. Mostly noise, but it was history. Not sure what happened to the recording though.

Chuck, on your Elvis post.... I was in high school still, working at a furniture store delivering to a home near Palestine, TX. Almost drove off the road with a trailer full of furniture. Years later as production director at KLDE I did some pretty cool vignettes to play on the anniversary of the King's death/disappearance. There are plenty of great stories out there from the likes of Joe Ford...and other jocks...plus I got great stories from a Houston cop who guarded the hotel when Elvis came to the Rodeo. It was amazing what he was offered just for a glimpse of Elvis or his room.
