Where's Bill Cross?

Just curious as to what happened to Bill Cross of Y-106, BJ-105 and for a short time WTKS? As I recall he got pushed out when Russ & Bo went to nights @ Real Radio back in the mid 90s ... but was maybe still doing a comic book collecting TV show on one of the independent TV stations at that time.

Kind of you to remember me. The true story of how I left Real Radio is best left for another day. Suffice it to say that my tenure at Real Radio was the worst experience of my entire radio career.

Following Real Radio, I spent a brief period with Cox Radio in Orlando doing weekend shifts on WMMO and handling the Promotions Department for Classic Rock 96.5. (The comic book collecting show was a short-lived series I did as a favor to a friend.)

I am now the senior copywriter in the marketing department for a company that provides financial education. I work out of their home office in Cape Coral, Florida. Yes, I'm a guy who writes junk mail and spam (among other things) for a living. I seem to be pretty good at it.

I live with my daughter, who is now attending college in Southwest Florida, as well as two "weiner dogs" (appropriately named Oscar and Mayer) and a 20-year old cat.

I am not real fond of the animal that radio has morphed into. I spent most of my time listening to homemade CD's while driving or the digital music service that comes with my cable.

But again, thanks for remembering. The years at Y-106 and BJ105 were a lot of fun. I'm also proud to say that every show I ever hosted saw an increase in their ratings during the time I was hosting.

Well, that's good to hear.

Up to now, I though I was.

(Think "Dead Cats"...)

i remember you too billl from the morning show days at both stations. I too worked at real radio, i must have come aboard right after you left - i was a 'real music weekends' jock.

i now do weekends at a greatest hits station in tampa area. We actually still play CDs from time to time.

believe it or not bill, i remember hearing you on 989 as well. Radio is getting worse by the year here. I pray to god the radio god comes here and to a few other markets as well.
but like that will happen here.

Oldguy:

Okay, I remember now. You were one of the highlights of my radio career. I especially remember Jim Bakker's furniture store. And yes, dead cats....

I did a few fill-in shifts on WHOO-AM when Cox still owned it and it was playing "American standards" (everything from the 1930's up through softer rock and pop of the present. Not only were we using CD's. But there really was no playlist and I could put together music sets they way I wanted to. Obviously, the ratings were miniscule, but I really enjoyed playing radio like the old days.

Believe it or now, radio in Southwest Florida is much better than Orlando despite the fact that we are a much smaller market area. I don't know what it is about Orlando, but it has never been as vibrant in radio as you would think.

Ahhhh Bill Cross...
The other list of names from Y106 (and later WCAT) and BJ105 I remeber working with:
Jeff Cohen, Rick Stacy, Jimmy Steele, Bobby Sharpe, Rick Stone, Kevin Casey, Jeff Fox, Shadow Stevens... I could go on, but I'll only feel older.
Thanks for the inspiration those years ago, and the wisdom today.

Hey Bill Cross!! Wow!! I just visited Orlando the week before Christmas and as I was driving around, I thought about you and Alan and wondered how you guys were doing!! Glad to see that you're doing well......btw, I get tickled every time I see Darryl Hammond (lol)!...amazing! Brian Thomas and I have remained good friends, although since he was made head of 60's/70's programming at CBS, he's stopped returning my calls (lol)...

John, good to see your post! This is becoming an Orlando radio reunion.

I haven't seen Brian Thomas in years but I'm glad he seems to be doing well. Tell him that if he's looking for a geat morning show for one of the CBS 60/70's stations, I can be tempted out of retirement. ;) I think Jeff Cohen might be up for it, too (now living in radio retirement in Virginia).

Saw Darrell Hammond when he was in Orlando doing stand-up a few years back. Got a chance to chat with him after his show. It was fun to talk over old war stories.

Am I correct in presuming that Alan Spector is still working at 96.5?

hmmmm...I really don't know what Alan is up to these days. As far as a morning gig invlving you and Jeff, you may want to take note of what's happening at 105.9 in Orlando.....I'm just sayin' (lol)...It's great to hear from you...!!!

Wow, hey Bill, its Terry Foxx, I was just talking to John Summers about you today...Its been a while bro...Some of the best times in radio was at BJ105 for me...You were always very nice to me, and helped me on my way to a pretty good radio career...I hope your doing well my friend...

I've been very fortunate having been here at KLUV in Dallas/Ft. Worth for almost 13 years!! I'm currently doing afternoons and it's the gig of my life!
