Where's Duemig?

http://www.talkers.com/2013/03/20/wednesday-march-20-2013/
WDAE sports talk host Steve Duemig is off his afternoon drive show indefinitely at management’s insistence. Duemig tells the paper he’s still under contract, ready and willing to work but Clear Channel management has pulled him from his show with two months left on his deal. According to Duemig, a clause in his contract allows him to talk with other stations 60 days before the contract ends...

This could be just the elixir that 98.7 The Fan needs...

He says management tried to pressure him to sign a new deal before that window opened. That contract was signed before ratings-challenged WHFS “Sports Radio 98.7” was put on the air by CBS Radio and it’s possible the company will try to steal him away.
This is the more important part to the story. I was listening live last week when he was getting pissed about how they said on a Wednesday, he had to sign a new contract by 5 pm the next day. He was going on and on about how he has two months left on his deal and how if he ends up off the air people listening would now why.

I know Duemig has a hell of an agent, and I know any agent worth a damn who has a 60 day window in the contract to talk to other stations to gauge a market for his clients services would be a fool to blindly pass that up just because CC said "sign it now or see ya".

I think I have a feeling CBS starting a station is going to be great for Duemig's bank account either way.

Also, let's not forget Jerry Peatuck is over at 98.7, and he was Duemig's producer/etc for well over a decade, maybe they try to get the band back together?

It seems from hearing others on this board that Duemig is pretty polarizing. I enjoy having the option to tune in to his show, even if I don't listen consistently. I think it would be a decent loss for 620, but it wouldn't have to be the end of the world. I heard Krazniqi today and thought the little bit I heard was alright. I have really enjoyed Bobby Fenton's show on the weekends there but I haven't heard him in a couple weeks. He seems like he'd be a really good option if he is still around. I have suggested him for 98.7 in another thread. He should be on full time. I'm sure there are probably several other names too that we may have no idea about.

Either way, it's interesting to think of what is in the balance for both stations based on how this thing ends. Is he done at 620? The article left me with the impression that he could be back on if an agreement is reached.

"polarizing" is the first clue that someone has a chance of being successful as a talk host. The guy who doesn't generate strong feelings either way is the guy who's not going to get it done for a station.

Isn't this about the third time this stunt has happened dating back to the 1250 days?

It's contract time, Big Dog barks, management is silent, he disappears for awhile then, bang...all is forgiven.

Ta-da!

OK so we've seen this "stunt" before. HOWEVER, they've gone to the point of pulling him off the 620 WDAE web site. I mean... who does that unless they truly believe the guy is not coming back. I'll be honest as I always am here. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if CBS isn't throwing Steve the world to have him over at 98.7. He knows his value, his agent knows, and both broadcasting companies know. Bottom line is love him or hate him, and even if he's off air for a few weeks or a few months, 98.7 scores a HUGE win in this battle if they land him. With the rocky start they've had in the last 6 months, a personality like Steve would turn the tables and a struggling station around in a heartbeat. My gut feeling is the guy is going to CBS and Clear Channel should be really embarrassed for letting it not only get this far but leaving him on the air long enough to even entertain the idea that there's a "problem" to WDAE's listeners.

I agree with all this. But he isnt exactly pulled form the website, if you just click on air talent, he isnt there, but if you click ron and ian, and scrol to the bottom there is (or was, last time i lookedA) a link to the big dog page.

And listening today, CC is still using his voice ads for commercials, I have never heard a station that has cut ties with a host use any voice promos of an ex host, even hours after the fact

Lol...ok, i ll gladly retract if indeed he's been let go...but yanking his bio off the web is simply using another platform for publicity...of which The Fan has gotten more of lately...but it has not translated into listeners.

Either way, the Dog is getting mileage out of you folks.

All I'm saying is IF the guy is expected to return to WDAE, and the powers that be DO believe that's gonna happen, there's no reason whatsoever to yank him off the "On Air" menu section of their site or even remove spots that are using his voice or endorcement. Most listeners would assume the guy is on vacation or something like that. Nothing unusual about him being off for even as much as 2 weeks. Anyway, as far as the rest of the site goes... absolutely, sure, I agree you that can still find "his page" and links too it elsewhere. Same goes for on air. It takes a bit more of an online and on air clean up to completely remove someone who's been a part of things for so long. I just find it really strange to yank him off the main menu so quickly. To the average listener (and not geeks and insiders like us), all that does is confuse and upset fans of the particular personality in question. If it were me, I'd leave everything as is unless I'm pretty damn sure he's not coming back.

In other words... they'll have a "dog" in this fight. :D

After they canned Sileo, they still had him on a promo for something, that suicide prevention thing or some crap, eventually they had steve voice it

Clear Channel would be pretty stupid to let him go, he's the only thing they have left.

What do you mean that's all they have left? If CC didn't have strong talent on their station they wouldn't be beating the crap out of 98.7 in the ratings. I don't know how Duemig comma do much of anything honestly. I moved here in 2008 and was listening to 620, reading about the station/area for over a year before that and for everyone I heard who said they liked him and listened, there were 5 people saying they hate him and don't. I've tried to listen to him several times but he is so annoying I can't. According to the word of others, I am not alone.

In my opinion, he gets solid listenership, but the thing is his demo is skewing older. It seems he likes pushing the horse racing and such, I assume as a way to bring "something different" to the market. Some days I like him, some days I want to change the station... but I can't stand Rich Herrera on 98.7 on the same time slot. Booger has shaped up to be a decent co-host, but for some reason Herrera has grated on me since he was the Rays pre and post game guy. No disrespect to Rich, he does a pro job, just my personal taste.

I'm sure Duemig is just dying to go to 98.7 and try to lift their 0.0.

Now, let's be fair: it's 0.7 - but with one-third of WDAE's share, it just feels like a 0.0...

All Duemig has done of late is complain about Facebook and Twitter and talk about how much better things were in the old days when MEN WERE MEN AND JUST PICKED UP THE PHONE AND CALLED!

Radio is changing and he refuses to change. He had his time, and was great for years, but now it's time for something else.

The GM, from 102.5, should hire Steve Duemig. I would dump the Billy Madison and Artie Lange shows, and move Duemig into the 10am-3pm slot. I would move Drew Garabo into the 10pm-1am slot. If Garabo wouldn't accept his new shift, I would fire him too.
Hiring Duemig would hurt both 98.7 and 620. We all know the Billy Madison show is nothing but segments from his San Antonio, TX, morning show, and I don't believe many people in Tampa care about Artie Lange. WHPT is covering the entire Nascar Cup Series this season so adding Duemig and his hockey talk may not be a bad idea.

He's the only thing 620 has left
