Now that's he's no longer at WJOX/WSPZ where is Herb Winches? I heard him doing some stuff for the Crimson Tide Sports Network last time I was in town. Is he doing anything else at the moment?
Basically he has two choices, WERC and WYDE. ERC I don't believe has announced its afternoon show yet, but AM at this point might be too much "B" team for him. His pride might only let him join the other FM Talk station, The Source. Problem is, The Source already has a full schedule...but for Herb, you never know.
Heard Herb on "Max'd Out with Max Howell" this morning. He says he's taking the old Finebaum spot on WERC AM-960 as well as doing the 10 PM sports on TV-42 [CBS] in Birmingham. [I guess AM radio is OK when you're unemployed!] I really thought that was why he left JOX.
Some would say you were correct the first time regarding CBS 42. Same could be said for several other tv stations too to be fair. Also, I believe this is actually a "return" to tv for Herb.
Herb Winches got his start on Birmingham TV in 1974 or 1975 as the sports anchor on Channel 6. In 1981 he and news anchor Joe Langston jumped from Channel 6 to Channel 13 (Scott Richards was hired to replace Langston, and has since spent over 26 years bringing the news to us). Langston and Winches jumped back to Channel 6 in '83. In '87 or '88, Winches was fired from Channel 6 due to the station's lackluster ratings and replaced by Eli Gold (Channel 13's newscast was that good, plus NBC was the dominant network at the time).
This begs another question: are Herb Winches (6, 13 and 42) and James Spann (13, 6 and 33/40) the only Birmingham television personalities to appear on three stations in the market?
