Should be where's Jack and DJVince 1, looks like the Thursday Night Thunderstorm has cleared out. Jack is alive and well living on WSYB. Wonder how long his sports reports were a staple on 97.1 through the years.. Got to say over 30.
More brilliance from Pamal...is it imcompitence? On purpose?...what is the future of 97.1? Bet money that the fate of the Z staff will the same of the old WEBK...all fired and automated after that...by summertime...what a shame :-[

This should be of no surprise to anyone. Pamal is, at best, a very mediocre radio company that certainly hasn't provided great radio in Rutland since they have been there. They blew a huge opportunity to get some much needed sizzle when they went back to "Z-97" and blew it. They think small-time and have no leadership in the market. No creativity. We all know that Cat Country should be put on the 50,000 watt WEBK frequency but that won't happen because theydon't get it. sad they control so much of radio in that area. Very uninspired. Very uninvolved. Very uncreative. Class dismissed.

I agree with Mr. D, the return to Z 97 had about as much excitment as "Light Rock 98" becoming "Mix 98.1" sometime in 95 or 96. What a yawner.. Pamal does have some good AC's and CHR's in their stable.. WHUD and B95.5 for AC's and Fly 92 and K104 as CHR's. Seems like they give the gurus in Rutland a fair amount of rope to either climb or hang themselves with.. I wonder if the sweeper, "If you want a better MIX, go ask Betty Crocker" will make a comeback !!
Agreed. I would think that they would be smart enough to capitalize on something as wonderful as getting away from the generic "kiss" moniker. Add to that the fact that most people in that area never stopped calling it (or writing it down in arbitron diaries as) "Z-97" in the first place. Not promoting that switch was a waste, I bet it was because they did not want to pay for TV and Print ads to support it.Mr. DUBbonet said:

How long do you think before the "gurus" are kicked to the curb by the honchos at Pamal? Seems the sales staff at Pamal VT have forgotten that they now own Z97 and WSYB...have you listened lately? NO COMMERCIALS on WZRT and ONLY PSAs on WSYB...is the clock ticking on the managers of Pamal VT??

Moon B---You can't pick up the current Cat signal outside of Rutland. There is an entire area south of Rutland that could gain listenership and revenues. besides...WEBK gets no ratings and has precious little advertising on it. Use the bigger signal to get into the outskirts where the listenership will be huge. BTW...here are the current country stations in Vermont...
WOKO, Froggy, KIXX, The Wolf, WYKR. Here are the current stations playing most of the same genre of music as WEBK...Q106, The Fox, Frank, WIZN, Champ, WKVT-FM.

I'd put WEBK when it's broadcasting music (not Yankees) in the same ballpark as "The Point" or WCLX. There's no need to put WEBK on 94.5. WEBK does serve a wide niche, within it's coverage area.
In southern and southwestern VT, Pamal Sister "Froggy 107-1" gets in, as well as powerhouse WGNA-FM from Albany. And you have WYRY and 95.3 "The Bear" in southeastern VT.. Country seems well covered to me.

DAG...Sorry to disagree with you on the WEBK "niche"...no ratings equals no "niche"!! Pamal Rutland...ala K. Gilbert rave about the ratings of Cat in Rutland County...If Cat is so great...why not give it the best possible signal? Maybe thats what they have planned for the 97.1 signal...971 Cat Country??? Perhaps they are afraid to reach out to a larger audience? Perhaps they know the sales staff couldn't handle a trip outside the Rutland County limits? I think they would get lost....Pamal claims to be all about the "local" thing...wouldn't Cat be more local in Manchester VT than Froggy or the station in Albany??? Oh yeah...it once was...Are they afraid of the West Leb Market? Or Glens Falls? or Middlebury? All those markets are ripe for the pickin' for the "mighty" Cat Country...

Come now Dudeman, when is the last time a 'rating point' bought something in a retailer. Cat Country, hampered signal in all has done fantastic in Rutland County for most of it's life. Most of the revenue for Cat was in Rutland County as well. Thats the 'ratings' that really count. All things being equal how would Cat Country stack up against Kixx, The Wolf. or even Froggy (The Barre Edition) ? I bet there would be no real changes, each station would be strong it's own local area. When Cat had 95.1, that signal did indeed blast into Glens Falls. If ratings did equal revenue, then a station like WEQX should be running as many PSA's as you may be hearing on Z 97 and WSYB. Trust me, ratings do not equal revenues the proclaimed market of "Lebanon, Rutland, White Junction".

I would also add that it seems to me, through conversations with people that have programmed WEBK, the real problem is that Pamal does not understand the format and are afraid to let it grow. Triple A is not like AC or Country where you can just pay a consultant for tune up CD's every month.

DAG...your point about the local "feel" of Cat is good, but I still think Pamal is afraid of success beyond the Rutland County border...we can agree to disagree on that one...the fact you hear so many PSAs on WSYB and Z is because the sales staff at Pamal is lazy...a good salesperson would look at the opportunity of selling two more stations as "cha-ching"...clearly the sales staff and management at Pamal don't take the two stations seriously.
Dennis Miller will be a great addition to the line-up...now if they could just put Glenn Beck somewhere...it would be a great conservative station!

Dudeman, I'm enjoying the discussion. When WJJR was a stand alone once upon a moon, they used to have sales offices in Glens Falls and in Hanover. JJR even had a small translator at 103.9 in Hanover to fill in a few gaps. They used to bill quite well in those markets. Z 97 started to enjoy good billings east of Killington where the Lebanon connection made perfect sense.
I don't know if I would call the Pamal sales staff lazy, they are for the most part a good group of people. After all a good sales staff works off of good solid direction from the sales management who in turn takes well executed direction and leadership from a general manager.. Something to think about there.

I would not call the GM of Pamal in Rutland lazy. I don't think that word would fit. Perhaps you can fill in your own blank here, and confirm with your sources from the mean streets and back alleys of Rutland..
I didn't say "lazy" was the word I heard on the street...many sources...not all in the back alleys of Rutland...her rep is well known in the UV... 8)
