Simon .. word is they may have a format change .. could it be they might do Oldies? Entercom had Oldies 93 before it became WPAW "The Wolf".

Why would Entercom change Simon to "Oldies" when they blew up Oldies 93, despite decent numbers?

I can picture 98.7's next format now...Jammin' Oldies? No wait...how about Hurban (Hispanic Urban)? MMM...Movin'? No, wait, I've got it...TV THEMES! 24/7!

With special programs dedicated to Sea Shantys! :D
How about 'Punk Country'! I want to whip your cow. I want to show you how.

Dittohead1 is correct but about five years too late in his assessment. Terrestrial radio died as a music source ages ago. You can still smell the embalming fluid everytime you turn on the Buzzard (or the Buzz or whatever the hell they are calling it) or Simon (We Play Everything! Really, we do! We just play a lot of the same crap over and over again, but by gum WE.PLAY.EVERYTHING!) or the embarrassingly unctuous WMAG or the assinine Wolf or the spectaculary mediocre WTQR.

The big lie is that Big Radio, a la Clear Channel or Entercom is "increasing variety" or that "the listener wins." All it is is one lame McFormat after another. Nothing new under the sun.

Why not some talk? It's better than hearing another bad 80's record on Simon or some stinking pseudo country on the Wolf. Or hear Rod Davis ooze his peculiar blend of smarm and slime into the mic.

As for Wicker, he had some talent. He tried to bring something to the party. Now he's another casualty. The way radio tosses people onto the garbage heap is dispicable.

Brent Millar and the top brass at Entercom, do the world a favor; go home tonight, pour yourself a stiff bourbon, draw a nice warm bath, get in the tub and slit your wrists. It worked for Frank Pantangello in Godfather II.

Say what you want about BDM, but he does have a better VARIETY of your favorite suicide solutions.

Oh, and don't forget to slice VERTICALLY, not horizontally.

Somewhere...roaming around the city...is a wild PIG with a new $100 dollar bill taped to its stomach...
... um, have you seen any new people around the station?

The more I consider Simon changing formats, the less I think they will go up against WKZL. They really need Simon to succeed. It's their answer to WMAG. You have to consider their National combo. They have WJMH to get the younger demo ratings, they have WQMG to get the middle-age Black demo, they have WPAW that will reach a variety of demos in the Country lifestyle. SO, they need Simon to complete their National combo. The other factor are the Miller Kaplan reports. Those reports show you the % of revenue each station is getting in the market. Typically, the Simon and WMAG formats reach an upscale listener, so they can command higher rates to reach those listeners. When you consider both of these factors, you realize that they really NEED Simon to work. They just have to adjust it to get better ratings!

I also agree with Moonshine that it would cost too much at this point to go up against WKZL. Plus, more and more younger listeners are defecting from terrestrial radio. The audience is too fickle.

Radio is a tough business and those of us who work in it everyday understand that. it does seem that it has always been populated with people who hide their heads in the sand and hope for the best...and then are surprised when bad things happen to them. I can tell you Jeff Wicker is not one of those guys. He is a hard worker, dedicated and totally professional and I'm sure he handled his recent job loss as a pro and is ready for his next challenge. He had several years to try and make something happen, ultimately it did not, but I'm sure
Jeff isn't wishing anyone dead over the recent turn of events.

Big Dick Metzenbaums comments are disgusting, but not surprising.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, sit on the sidelines and bitch.

Jeff Wicker just kind of disappeared from Simon. Their ratings have been going south for some time and as they say, it was just a matter of time. Carmen sounds good and The Prize Guy might be good. 98.7 has been around the format wheel several times in the past years and it makes one question if they will spin the format wheel again? Going afer KZL might be a choice but it would be costly and could take some time. In these economic times I am not sure Entercom will invest the dollars it will take to battle KZL. Somebody mentioned Talk and that could be an option since WSJS and WZKT do not cover the entire market now comes the quesion what would they put on the air? All the major syndicated talkers are already in the market and a full blown news operation would be very costly in talent. Top 40 or CHR makes snese for all they would need to do is change the music some and either get new liners and jingles. Wouldn't such a change bring them full circle?

I happen to think Jeff was a decent jock. He wasn't phony dj sounding. It's really sad to think the boobs at thee stations running things are switching formats every 18months and expect to get results. I say fire the clueless GM that can't make up his mind and stop destroying good talent's careers.
