Where's KJOJ of La Raza ?

Don't know why, but 103-3 is a dead carrier up here in Highland Village. Has been so for over 4 hours now, since I caught the silence at just after 16:00. KTJM is carrying on about its broadcast day normally, the one exception being that I have heard no mention of the 103-3 simulcast on it. There have been several La Raza liners, the jock mentioned "La Raza de Houston" during his mic work, but nothing has contained the longstanding "La Raza noventa ocho punto cinco y ciento tres punto tres".

Has the simulcast been split up, or is KJOJ-FM having technical difficulties?

Edit to add: or in this case, delete. Forget everything above. This isn't KJOJ-FM dead. La Raza just made its way on top of the carrier for a few seconds a couple of times. This is something else keying down on the channel. The only application I see for anything new on 277 is this:

http://fccdata.org/?facid=197148

There's no way I should receive anything from this new allocation down here, so what do we actually have here running the open carrier on channel 277? BTW, the open carrier has no stereo pilot here.

Reception reports appreciated.

LOL maybe it's a pirate mate.

I suppose. Seems like the captain would set sail with some type of audio though, right? It's just dead. Been so for two days. Just did a bit of traveling around the northside and it's not there near 610. Nor is it there heading east, as I headed towards Hobo's for lunch off of the Baytown East Freeway. Came back up 45, just north of Airline and that's where the silence starts breaking in. Apparently, the origin is north Houston or Aldine, unless this truly is the little LPFM from Conroe running a heap load of power that it shouldn't be. I don't believe that to be the case. Was hoping for Frog or Rage to check in, as both gentlemen are farther north than my location by about 15 miles a piece. Frog to the NW, Rage to the NE. Frog may be a little too far, but if I'm catching this thing in the 4-4, hopefully Rage may be able to lock on it in Humble as well. I'm hoping, as I think you are right on the money. We may very well have a patched eye type rearing up in H-Town. It's been awhile for the northside. I believe the year-long "Acres Home Community radio station" at 96-1, which was nothing more than a swear word laden rap effort, was the last one.

I'm hearing a rather strong mono open carrier on 103.3 at my Cy-Fair location. Was also hearing it (much weaker) along I-10 near The Heights. Not hearing KJOJ during signal dropouts; anyone on the south side hearing them? I haven't checked 98.5 to see if the simulcast references have disappeared.

The 10 watt Conroe LPFM would seem to be too far away from me to put in a signal at the level I'm getting, but they are licensed from a 300 foot tower.

Thanks for the report, Frog. I took a little drive up to Greenspoint for heck of it just now. It gets stronger and stronger the farther north you go, but I was still getting some dropouts and static here and there. It's most assuredly from the north, likely Montgomery County. Wonder how this will effect the neighoring KYBY and KCYB duo on 276? If it's reaching down here, they've certainly got it loud and clear in Backyard Radio's...well, backyard. I didn't catch it at 610 & Ella earlier, so to hear you did receive it on the Katy is interesting to me. I noticed something a bit peculiar with it in my drivings. Driving north or south, the signal is weaker than when the car is facing west or east. I don't believe I've ever had that occur on my car unit. You can really tell the difference, and it seems peculiar if the signal is coming at me from the north.

I didn't know that a facility could light up for testing purposes without an assigned call set, either.

Edit to add: Sorry, Frog. KJOJ-FM is on the air as normal. You can hear bits and pieces of it while driving around down here, beneath the open carrier. Neither are strong, but the new signal has overtaken the even weaker KJOJ-FM, from this blue dot on Google Maps. The simulcast continues, but I have noticed more usage of a simplified "La Raza Houston" than the use of the two frequencies recently. Hey, it works for The Eagle, right? I don't listen much to KTJM, just don't really like the selection. Kind of a La Ranchera and Más Variedád guy myself.

Reporting from E Mt Houston and 59 north (LOS TACOS DE ORO, YOU SHOULD TRY THE PUPUSAS THEY SALE HERE PURPLEDEVIL) it's dead I get nothing but static on 103.3

Thanks for the report and tip, mrtejano. I've never tried Los Tacos de Oro, so I welcome the suggestion and, of course, one good tip deserves another. If you find yourself up on Aldine Bender, right next to the retirement community and Teloloapan there is a little hole in the wall named Taqueria Michoacan. It's on the left coming from the North Freeway, same orange strip center as Teloloapan. Say hello to Hortencia and Marisol for me, and tell them el güero con el pelo largo sent you. I highly recommend the chilaquiles, but if you're really hungry give the Burrito California a try. The thing is $5 and is as big as a small toaster. If you can finish that beast, you're a better man than me.

Anyway, back to the topic. With no reception at East Mount Houston @ 59, it would appear this thing has some degree of directionality to it. The application for the new LPFM up in Conroe shows no directional aspect engineered.

The plot thickens...103-3's silence continues, day 3.

I do. Driving around, I have to rely on my Kenwood unit, and the signal strengths just aren't as strong hooked up to the aftermarket, as they were with the stock unit that came from Chrysler. I've got a good mind ot put the stock back in it, but reverting back to a cassette deck? I'm not that nostalgic. So, what are you thinking here, Joe? Jersey Village origination, up by the Frog? That takes some sheer stupidity if this indeed pans out to be a pirate. Why would you ever park one on a full power's channel?

Could they be just testing without programming now? Maybe they plan on moving frequencies off 103.3 in the future.

I'll try some West Houston reception after work. I don't think Cypress radio would cause too many problems. Houston is definitely crowded to the point the only frequencies available are less than optimal. I am seeing a lot of posts here that lead to the conclusion people are buying frequencies with no idea whatsoever about what to do with them once they have them. I guess they park on a frequency, go out and try to sell advertising, if that doesn't work they don't care. The 1090 situation sounds like that in particular. All the money spent up front, none left to operate, sales didn't materialize - owner gone.

Dont hear it anymore...

You can tonight. The silence is back at 20:05, however KJOJ is giving it fits. Sitting still here at the house, I can null KJOJ and get the dead air with no problems, pointing towards Jersey Village (NW from here). Rotating back towards the Galleria, the typical fair reception of KJOJ.

I wonder who is doing this? As Joe stated, someone apparently has a spare transmitter with significant power, and nothing else better to do than jamming KJOJ. Just one inch of rotation to my antenna takes the dead carrier from crystal clear to non-existence.

So how's the dead carrier? Still testing or off? Anyone know who it was? LOL
