Where's My WROR? 105.5 Worcester Pirate?

Is this some new pirate station? I've never had trouble getting them before. Driving on Route 290 through Worcester listening to 105.7 WROR today - all of a sudden the signal went to static and I heard reggae/urban music coming through... Flipped down to 105.5 and there was a (must have been new) station playing a mix of Urban Music.

Wasn't too powerful, but it did interfere with WROR for several miles (starting near Holy Cross and ending past Route 190.)

I googled "Flavor 105.5 Worcester" and came up with several websites mentioning it.

Here is one link:
http://events.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&eventID=449136.09576

Nice that they put the phone number on there (508-757-0557) Hopefully that will make it easier for the FCC to shut them down so I don't miss the Men from Maine tomorrow.

Back when there was a 105.5 in Brockton killing their signal, I heard from somewhere (maybe on here) that Loren and Wally took calls on the air about it from people not being able to hear them. I don't think that station ever got a formal NOUO from the FCC, but it did disappear eventually.

I must say I do get a kick out of reading some the way these posts on these type websites are worded. Now what exactly is urban music? Why not just be honest with yourselves and say black people music? It is what’s intended is it not? Btw are folks the like of Lil Wayne and Chris Brown considered urban music as they are often played on most CHR/TOP 40 stations around the county.

I also get a kick out of the level of enthusiasms that’s displayed on this site at the thought of a pirate radio station getting shut down by the FCC. It shows just out of touch with reality some of you so-call “radio enthusiasts” are as the FCC can’t even shut down a pirate station with an address without going through a long drawn out process which often takes years.

Yet, you’ve expressed some type of strange (almost wet your pants ??? ) excitement at the thought of since they provided a phone number, the FCC will somehow miraculously shut them down overnight before your daily patrol of the roadways tomorrow in search of other pirate radio station. Do you see how ridiculous you sound?

I just put Urban because I don't know the difference between all of the different formats. I heard them say "Urban Flava, hip hop, reggae, reggaeton" etc... Not trying to offend anyone.

Not to mention that stations that primarily play hip-hop, R&B, and reggaeton are called "urban" by all the trades. But then again, the trades have odd format names for a number of formats. Let's name some:

Tropical: Way too broad. Could lead someone to believe that this could mean all music from places between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. My suggestion: "Latin pop" or "Latin dance."

CHR/rhythmic: After weeding out some of these stations for really sounding "urban" (I'll rename this format later), I would simply call this format "dance."

Hot Adult Contemporary: It's old people music... with sizzle! My suggestion: "Adult top 40" or "Adult Hits."

Those "Jack" or "Mike" formats: OK, you just read the last one and said, "but adult hits is really..." My suggestion: "Variety Hits."

Urban: Let's face it, many people in their teens and 20s in the suburbs and rural areas listen to this kind of music. Instead, let's just call the format what it actually is: "R & B/Hip-Hop."

Active Rock: Who was the genius who thought of this one? Easily, you could just say "new rock" or "hard rock."

Alternative: I don't necessarily have a problem with the format name itself, I just think that some stations again could be weeded out and placed into... gasp!... active rock.

This reply went on too long...

You have to wonder... if there was a legal station that played music with a beat, other than WJMN, would fewer urban pirates exist?

I bet Rapking will tune in.
Gee I am famous ! Yes I will tune into this station when I am in the Worcester Area .

...and what about the people in Worcester who like to listen to WROR? The pirates need to be stopped and prosecuted.

Why in the name of ALL THINGS would there be an Urban/Hip Hop Pirate Radio Station in Worcester? When I travel in that area (Mass Pike) From Natick Area all the way just past Worcester I get HOT 106.3. As soon as I pass Worcester, I start to lose HOT 106.3

Anyone else get HOT 106.3 in that area, if so, how far north does it reach if you travel 290, and all those highways in that area?

I just picked it up driving on the Mass Pike, also oicked it up in Route 9 area of Framingham/Southborough area

106.3 may come in on the highways around Worcester but for the most part their signal fades significantly in-town. In fact, it fades quite a bit even when heading south on Rt. 146 towards Rhode Island.

However Jamn 94.5 is quite strong throughout most of the area so Urban/Hip Hop music is quite readily available. And then again, you can always just listen to the car stuck in traffic next to you to get your fix of Urban/Hip Hop Music. :(

Hot 106.3 comes in all the time in Framingham, but from living in the area it's completely unlistenable in the car since it's a blend of perhaps 65% WWKX / 35% "106.3 Frank FM" WFNQ. It seems that as the Pike is a magic snow-dividing line, it also functions as the 106.3 dividing line.

I even got HOT 106.3 driving through Natick Center, and the area where that Apple Farm is at where people goes Apple Picking, I got it in that area.

Thank you all for your time

Last night I was in Worcester around 8:30 so I decided to tune in this new Worcester pirate at 105.5. It was loud and clear with reggae music when I first tuned in near the Vernon Hill section. I was amazed that I was able to listen from Vernon Hill in Worcester through Millbury into Sutton (on Rt. 122A) and didn't lose the signal until I was near South Grafton. Whoever it is, their running at some pretty significant power and just begging for a visit from the FCC.

Took a lesson from Big City 101.3..Is it stereo or mono?
STEREO
I get it crystal clear here in Dorchester area. Sometimes I pick it up in East Boston and start losing it around Beachmont Area in Revere, then I pick it up again in parts of Revere

Are you sure you're getting Big City 101.3 in stereo? They don't appear to transmit in stereo. I've never heard them in stereo even driving through the city where they're very strong. I get them in loud and clear mono, the stereo indicator does not come on.

Just because you're getting them "crystal clear" does not mean you're getting stereo. If they're not broadcasting in stereo, you're getting them in "crystal clear" mono.

An FM mono signal tends to come in more clearly over distance than an FM stereo signal of the same wattage. That's probably why Big City 101.3 is not broadcasting in stereo.

I can't comment on what LAUROJRM reported about Big City 101.3 being in Stereo because I haven't heard them yet but the Worcester pilot at 105.5 was definitely broadcasting in Stereo. My stereo indicator was on from Worcester until I lost the signal near South Grafton.
