Where's NASCAR?

From a purely personal motivation: Where's NASCAR on the radio in Fort Wayne? NASCAR's MRN affiliate list dated 2009 indicates that it should be on WBTU. Nope. I don't have a TV in my woodshop, so I rely on the radio. But scanning the FM band delivered nothing. AM was OK for Cleveland OH and Coldwater MI, but soon the afternoon skywave issue came into play. So, WBTU doesn't carry MRN? If they say they can't sell it, that's a fallacy. What's still more bankable than NASCAR? Plus most affiliates get tickets to prime the clients with. What gives?

Allow me to list things more salable (in my experience) than NASCAR:

- Warm 93.9 with its 2 share
- University of Indianapolis basketball on WXLW
- The daily obituaries

And I've never known a station to get NASCAR tickets when they sign up for PRN or MRN.

I'll add that I don't think the MRN contract requires carrying 100% of the races, so WBTU could still be the Ft. Wayne affiliate, they just didn't carry today's race.

Things have changed. 20 years ago we got tickets. Also had no problem selling it out. That was then, I guess it's different now. Thanks for the value of you insight.

Was there a NASCAR TV contract 20 years ago? On one of the main nets? I think they may have gotten 3 or 4 races on CBS in the late 80s or early 90s, but certainly not 3/4 of the season.

MRN has been around for quite a while covering the radio side. On TV, CBS would run the Daytona race, and that was about it. Only when cable began it's growth did NASCAR on TV really take off. Had to fill all that programming time on cable. Remember when ESPN Australian rules football, rugby, and curling?

We carried it on WGRT in Danville back in the 80's. It was a tough sell, and we only had one local sponsor, Yellow Cab of Indy. Their spot was a jingle with an annoying aah-ooga horn at the beginning, and it sure got old after a while. We did have some loyal listeners, but back then, probably not that many. We also carried a weekly NASCAR talk show from MRN where the previous week's race was discussed in length along with driver interviews and Goody's Headache spots. The best part of the whole thing was "Time Check Theater" which was chit-chat between the announcers before air time. They would make fun of each other, tell corny jokes, and it was much more entertaining than the actual race.

Yeah. I really miss Benny Parsons for the same reasons. :(

Now the combined MRN/PRN package has five talk shows, several short-form programs, plus Racin' Country USA. Most of the talk shows began in 2000-2003, except for Nascar Live, which is now in its 26th season, hosted by Eli Gold.

And yes, Swap Shop should also go on my list of things more salable than NASCAR.

I thought Fort Wayne's NASCAR station was 100.1 FM.
They had them last year.
Hey Juan! Nobody had them last Sunday for the premier NASCAR race of the year, the Daytona 500. I usually work in the shop on the weekends, and with no cable out there, I listen on the radio. But, as I've been told repeatedly here, no one can sell it.
