Where's Terri-Rae Elmer Going?

Yesterday was her last day at KFI. They said it was her decision, that she got a new job elsewhere; anyone know the details? I wonder what could be a sweeter gig for a reporter than what she had.

I must say, I'm a bit shocked. And I've only been listening to John and Ken for 2 years. Imagine lifelong loyal listeners?

From "The Official KFI AM 640" on Facebook:

As you may have heard at 6:50 tonight. It is with much sadness that we announce the departure of our beloved Terri-Rae Elmer. After 28 years at KFI, 18 on The John and Ken Show, she's decided to leave the station to pursue another opportunity in the market. We wish her the best...with heavy hearts. We love you and we'll miss you, T-Rae!

I really can't see KNX or KABC as "another opportunity" worth pursuing. And I can't imagine she's hurting for money working with J&K? (Aren't they the highest-billing show in that timeslot?) I really doubt Merlin is moving into Los Angeles.

There have been on-again, off-again rumors of exactly that.

Add up the dismal or worse performance of the LMA holder of 93.9, the fact that Emmis sold and partially partnered with Merlin in NY and Chicago and that Merlin is still on the move (Philly) and it makes the rumor have enough credence to be considered a real possibility.

IS KABC-FM coming? After what happened up north in Sac Town, I can't put it past them.

By the way, I recently heard a bit of KABC in the early afternoon. Sounds a lot more unprofessional now than it did a couple of years ago. KFI wins again.

I don't know how Burbank has kept the San Antonio folks out ... but hats off to KFI. They still sound as sharp and excellent as they did ten years ago. Too bad hundreds of other CC stations can no longer say the same thing.

And yes ... what is going on at KABC? It's like Citadel (and now Cumulus) simply don't care! Even KFWB sounds like it's receiving more love and attention.

I believe that the KFI website as well as Don Barrett got it wrong. There is no way Terri-Rae has been at KFI for 28 years. KFI didn't go talk until the late 80's. 87 or 88 or so and she didn't arrive until the 2nd talk PD George Oliva was hired. So at best about 22 years. I know I sound like I'm nitpicking, but 28 years would've put her there when it was a Top 40 station.

Terri-Rae leaving is sad news. John & Ken at KFI 18 years? Damn! I must be getting old! I remember when they started. Callers would call in P.O.'d that Tom Leykis was let go. They handled those callers well. Though I loved Tom's show on KLSX, his show on KFI back then was mostly political...most of which I disagreed with. John & Ken was a breath of fresh air.

I have been one of Terri_Rae's vocal critics over the years with her inability to read any news broadcast without goofing words up or her interrupting John and Ken too frequently, but nevertheless I do like her as a person, her charity causes and her longevity in radio, so it was sad hearing that she is leaving with the typical line that they are pursing other opportinunites. I sometimes fear that is what they always say when they are being pushed out. I do hope she has found another gig and that we will be able to hear her soon.

I don't like the idea of her going to KABC since that would be like stepping onto the Titanic on April 15, 1912.

First things first, is KFI about to get rid of their news department? Maybe the writing is on the wall? That was the first thing I thought when I heard she was leaving. (Hasn't Eric Leonard been MIA for a while now?) Walking away from a sweet gig for some "unknown" venture. Even if it is a morning show with Doug McIntyre. Just doesn't sound right to me. Perhaps she was being forced out?

Ok, I'm taking off my tin foil hat now. Carry on.

KFI is not getting rid of its news department.

FACTS:

It's dirt cheap operation, considering how much KFI bills. I think they have a total staff under 10, including the news director and editors. The reporters generate entire talk segments for the hosts, which is an inexpensive way to draw in listeners from KNX.

Eric Leonard is on "paternity" leave.

Shannon Farren will succeed Terri-Rae.

KFI has already posted an opening to replace Shannon's reporting gig:

She was the discussed straight person to John and Ken's antics. Once John said she had a "nice set" ...the news had little to do with it, it is entertainment.

Guess she's going to KABC after all ... ???

From today's TRI:

Sure enough, Doug McIntyre takes over mornings at Cumulus’ L.A. talker KABC (790). “McIntyre in the Morning”, as speculated in last week’s TRI, will feature Terri-Rae Elmer, who left the afternoon John & Ken show at Clear Channel's talk KFI. “T-Rae” had spent 22 years at KFI.

She's too talented to take a gig on the Titanic. But, I wish 'er well. Not sure how being a co-host on KABC with McIntyre is any better than being a defacto co-host on John and Ken.

I can think of one word that will help you understand: money. It's not like radio news reporters make a lot and any opportunity to get a co-hosting gig that gets you the money and your name on the billboard is an obvious upgrade, even if it is on a dying station.

Note though: J&K will miss her presence. She was the necessary ounce of softness to complement their pound of tough talk.

Think KABC will pull her into six-figures, then? I really doubt KFI was paying her much more than 50k. That would be reason enough to jump over to McIntyre's show.

I have no idea what KABC is paying her, but if she was making only $50,000, then even a bump to $60,000 is a significant boost and well worth changing employers.

And even I'm just pulling my $50k figure out of my butt. She could be making $32,500. She could be making $325,000 (doubtful even Ken makes that much).

But you're right. They very well could've topped her pay.
