The NWS website forecast discussion had a comment that they were going to run one more model before actually declaring the north metro Atlanta counties in the warning area. After the model was ran around 3 pm, they upgraded those counties to winter storm warning status. They rely on those models which for the most part is pretty accurate. What I think surprised everyone is that a weak southerly wind/front moved north during the late evening causing the temps to not drop like expected. Unfortunately, the models did not predict this. That is what made everyone have egg on their face.
It was interesting last week that they missed how much snow north Atlanta Counties got. Those counties got 3 inches when it was predicted to be dusting to 1/2 inch.
The bottom line is if you can predict the weather accurately, you are smarter than most people. But, I agree that most of these weathercasters blow things out of proportion. They should have simply reported that there was a potential for winter precip and left it at that. We all know how to prepare appropriately. We don't need the media to tell us when the first snow flake will fall. I was shocked when WSB said on Friday AM that they will show us the first snow when it falls.
